Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Former Yellow Springs resident Winifred (Winx) Champney Pozorksi died Sept. 6 at age 81, in Oak Park, Ill.

Ms Pozorski’s parents were Marge and Free Champney, both long time residents of Yellow Springs. Free Champney was manager of the Antioch Press and taught at Antioch College. Marge Champney, along with Marge Russell, started swimming instruction programs in Yellow Springs, and was instrumental in the creation of the Yellow Springs swimming pool.
Winx grew up in Yellow Springs and was born at home in the apartment house that used to stand where the Yellow Springs Library stands now. She attended the Antioch School (when it was located where Mills Lawn now stands), Bryan High School, the University of Chicago and Antioch College, and spent many years studying art at the Chicago Art Institute. Winx loved abstract painting and sent hand-painted cards at Christmas. She also loved swimming and was an active swimmer all of her life.

Winx was married to Robert Pozorski, who survives her. She was mother to Katherine, Matthew and Nathaniel, and grandmother to Gregory, Colin, Sam and William. Katherine preceded her mother in death. She is also survived by a brother, David Champney, of Baltimore, Md.; her two nephews, Mark Champney of Reston, Va. and Duncan Champney of Great Falls, Va.; cousin Tim Champney of Washington, D.C., and son-in-law Dan Styer of Oberlin, Ohio. She was a first cousin of the late Ken Champney of Yellow Springs and a niece of the late Horace Champney, also of Yellow Springs.

A memorial service will be held at the Third Unitarian Church of Chicago on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.
