YSHS BASKETBALL

Boys crowned tourney champs
In the opening weekend of its season, the YSHS boys varsity basketball team was crowned champions of the Ben Logan Tipoff Classic. On Friday night, the Bulldogs took down host Ben Logan in a physical contest 60–48. Leading the team were juniors Kaner Butler (17 points, 7 rebounds), Isaiah Taylor (10 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks), and senior Liam Weigand, who, in addition to scoring 10 points, made four of four free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The Bulldogs then dismantled Riverside in the championship game 71—41. Butler and Taylor led the way again with 22 and 15 points, respectively, as all 11 players on the roster made the scorebook. YSHS starts the season 2–0.

Girls win with free throws
The YSHS girls varsity basketball team knocked in 23 foul shots during the team’s 45–40 win over Springfield at home on Saturday. The Division IV Bulldogs were confident from the stripe (23–28), which gave them the advantage over Division II Springfield City, despite turning over the ball 16 times to Springfield’s four.

YSHS took a 20–12 lead going into halftime until the visitors climbed back into the game and within one of the Bulldogs. The teams were evenly matched, both bringing down 32 rebounds in the context. However, Springfield only scored three foul shots to the Bulldogs’ 23.

YS point guard Elizabeth Smith led her team with 18 points (10–14 from the line) and Shanice Wright added 15 points (7–9 from the line).

Last Tuesday the Bulldogs (3–2 record) walloped Belmont 67–23 after going up 40–11 at the half on the road. Smith had 25 points, brought down 14 rebounds and had five steals in the contest while Wright added 13 points and Julie Roberts scored 12. Other Bulldogs adding to the point tally were Jasmine Davidson (7 points), Molly Hendrickson (6 points), Danny Horton (2 points) and Amani Wagner (2 points).

YSHS fell to Stebbins on Wednesday at home, 77–43. Roberts and Smith both scored 15 points on the day.

On Monday, Dec. 8, the YSHS girls fell to Miami Valley on the road, 68–40. Smith and Wright scored 23 and 14 points, respectively.

McKINNEY BASKETBALL

8th-grade boys tip off season
The McKinney eighth-grade boys basketball team tipped off the season with two games this week.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs traveled to Greenon and ran into a very disciplined team. In the second and third quarters, the Knights dominated the Bulldogs on rebounds, while the Bulldogs struggled inside against Greenon’s 1-3-1 defense. McKinney’s three-point shots did not fall until Tyreese Benning got going in the late third and fourth quarters with four three pointers. In the fourth, McKinney outscored Greenon 19–9 thanks to the team’s full court press, Benning’s threes and Trey Anderson’s free throw shooting, but the team wasn’t able to overcome the deficit. They lost 52–39.

“It was an awesome effort by the Bulldogs and a very good learning experience for the team and the coaches,” Coach Branson Pyles said. Scoring leaders were Benning (18), Anderson (14), and Andrew Clark (7). Overall, the team went 14–17 from the free throw line.

On Monday, Miami Valley School arrived in town for McKinney’s first home and Metro Buckeye Conference game. A strong first-quarter press by the Bulldogs overwhelmed the inexperienced Miami Valley team and led to a convincing 58–11 win. All eight players on the roster scored during the contest.

Also coaching the team is Geoffrey Pitts.
