Ten Minute Play Festival hits the stage this weekend

A seasoned group of dramatists has worked up an original treat for the village this week, involving a set of short plays co-coordinator Miriam Eckenrode-Saari says include “some really funny ones, some sweet ones, some heavy duty ones, and some that are completely outrageously weird and screwy!” That’s the Yellow Springs Theater Company’s Ten Minute Play Festival coming to the Presbyterian Church this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30 and 31, at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.
The production includes works by long-time Ten Minute playwrights Jerry Holt, Lee Huntington and Wanda Strukus, as well as newer contributors Harold Wright and Holly Hudson. Holt’s play is a burglary spoof, while Strukus’s piece, Leopard, Tiger, Bride, Groom” (a wedding gift to fellow YSTC member Lorrie Sparrow) tackles the laws of nature. Huntington created two works, including “Ever After,” which takes place in a crypt. Hudson’s play touches on relationship, and Wright’s work portrays an elderly couple in Yellow Springs.
This fifth annual Ten Minute Fest marks the opening season of the YSTC and the folding of the Center Stage Theater group that launched both the festival and the YSTC. The YSTC and Ten Minute coordinators Eckenrode, Ali Thomas and Thor Sage expressed gratitude this week to the Center Stage group for the opportunity to keep the short plays alive. Local director Kay Reimers and writer Virgil Hervey started the Ten Minute Festival in 2011.
“We’re so grateful to Center Stage for bequeathing us with this [event],” Sparrow said.
