TENNIS

Tennis sweeps opponent 5–0
The YSHS tennis team took all five courts yesterday at its home opener against Spring Valley Academy. Augie Knemeyer, Kasey Linkhart, and Peter Day dominated the singles courts, all winning in two-set matches.

Doubles teams Henry Potts Rubin/Meredith Rowe and Gabriel Day/Dylan Dietrich also took their courts in two-set matches. Duard Headley, Annabel Welsh, Sam Green, Ziven Siler and Gage Ward are also valuable team members.

The team is now 1–1 going into three home matches this week on the Antioch College courts.

BASEBALL

Baseball takes early leads
The Yellow Springs High School baseball team got its season underway last Saturday with a double header against non-conference Newton. The visiting Bulldogs surprised the formidable Indians by taking early leads in both contests.

Aggressive base running played a key role with stolen bases by Jared Scarfpin (3), Donnie Isenbarger (1), Jonathan Clark (1), Devon Perry (1), and Aakeen Truss (1). There were RBIs by Liam Weigand (3) and Tony Marinelli (2). Unable to silence Newton’s bats, Yellow springs fell 16–4 and 20–2.

The first conference game took place Monday at the home of Emmanuel Christian Academy. Yellow Springs, for the third time in as many games, gained the early advantage. Lead-off batter Jared Scarfpin walked and stole second. Donnie Isenbarger laid down a bunt single to move the runner to third, and subsequently stole second. Liam Weigand plated two with a single and scored himself on a throwing error. Jonathan Clark pitched nearly three scoreless innings with four strike outs and two walks to maintain the Bulldogs’ three-run lead. But a thunderstorm ended the contest and the game was scheduled to be resumed the following day.

SOFTBALL

Girls drop doubleheader
The Yellow Springs softball team traveled to Greenon and were swept by the Greenon Knights in a doubleheader played at Greenon High School. Senior Jesi Worsham started both games for the Bulldogs at pitcher and Chelsea Horton pitched in relief both games.

TRACK AND FIELD

YSHS teams finish fourth, fifth
At the Old KTC track invitational at Waynesville last Friday, the girls squad, with a roster of 20, placed fourth out of nine teams. Competing against all Division I and II schools (YSHS is Division III), the girls team nonetheless hoped for a higher finish after taking second at last year’s Metro Buckeye Conference championships.

The boys squad, 15 strong after having finished runner-up at the MBC championships last spring, came in fifth out of nine teams at the Old KTC Invitational meet.

While no Lady Bulldog took first in an event, runner-up finishes were handed in by Julian Roberts (300-meter hurdles, 52 seconds), Charlotte Walkey (800-meter run, 2:43.90) and the 1600-meter relay team of Walkey, Roberts, Olivia Brintlinger-Conn and Dymeisha Banks (4:42.64). Taking third were Walkey in the 400-meter (67.24 seconds) and Jasmine Davidson in the shot put (29.2 feet).

In the boys competition, Kaner Butler won both the 110-meter hurdles (16.72 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (42.06 seconds), while Oluka Okia took second in the high jump with a leap of 5´10˝.

McKinney opens with a bang
Last Thursday, the McKinney track team opened its season hosting the annual McKinney Track Meet in front of a large, supportive home crowd. Unfortunately the weather did not hold and the meet had to be stopped after the 400-meter sprints. At that time, both the girls and the boys team were placed second behind Division I Wayne.

The boys 4×100-meter team (Campell, Crocker, Siler, Potter) ran with a time of 56.63, a new school record. The old record of 58.79 had been established last year (Crocker, Shell, Siler, Looper).
“It will be interesting to see how this very talented team is doing throughout the season when the exchanges are getting better,” Coach Peter Dierauer said of the relay.

Lady Bulldog Freddie Collins won the 100-meter dash in 14.15 and placed second in the long jump with a jump of 12´2˝. Her teammate Stacia Strodes won the long jump with a leap of 14´1˝. One of the oldest middle school records could be in jeopardy this year (Shirley Austin, 15´2˝).

Another standout this year is Blake Potter. He won the discus with a toss of 89´4˝ and the shot put with a throw of 31´8.5˝. This year, the 100-meter hurdles event is a strong suit for the girls team. The lady Bulldogs placed second (Kayla Brown, 20.65), third (Lily Bryan, 20.91) and fourth (Jude Meekin, 21.82). Meekin also placed third in the 1600-meter race with a time of 6:51.23.

Zach Lugo placed third in the 1600-meter race with a time of 5:53.39. True Hall placed second over 400 meters in a time of 1:12.44. Dharma Crocker placed third in the boys discus with 74´3˝. And the Lady Bulldogs 4×100-meter team (Brown, Collins, Ranard, Strodes) posted a 1:04.37 and placed second.
