Indians remain unbeaten

The Winds Cafe Indians have jumped out to an early season lead, with a 3–0 undefeated record after the second week of play. They won their second game of the season in an overwhelming 16–3 defeat of the Tom’s Market Pirates on Tuesday, June 9. Krishan Miller’s first inning bases-loaded double scored Henry Smith-Heston, Isaac Grushon and Lucas Dunn after all three opened with base hits. Miller scored on rookie Jaymon Rheinscheld’s double, who led the team going three for three at the plate with a pair of doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Smith-Heston and Grushon both also went three for three, scored two runs and knocked in two others, while Lucas Dunn also scored twice after going three for three with one RBI. Meanwhile, younger sister and rookie Regan Dunn hit a pair of singles, scored twice and knocked in one run, as did fellow rookie Sameer Sajabi and veterans Aiden Scavone and Brady Baker, while Ava Schell, Joslyn Herring and Hazen VanMeter all scored one run each after a base hit. The Pirates opened the game strong with a three-run first inning off singles and runs scored by Ben Espinosa, Jason Knemeyer and Malcolm Blunt. But a tough Indian defense held the Pirates scoreless the reminder of the game, and retired the side in order in both the third and fifth innings.
The Indians notched their second win of the week in an 11–1 thrashing of the Peach’s Reds in a make-up game on Sunday evening. Six runs in the first three innings allowed the Indians to put the game away early. A two-run first inning single and a second inning RBI single by Miller, a first inning RBI single by Schell, a first inning RBI groundout by Sajabi and an RBI single by Smith-Heston fueled the Indians’ offense. Miller racked up two runs scored and five RBIs on three hits in as many at bats for the Indians, while Grushon went two for three at the plate and scored three times and Smith-Heston scored twice off three base hits with one RBI. Meanwhile Dunn scored once off a pair of base hits, both Schell and Sam Miller each had one RBI and one run scored while Regan Dunn and VanMeter each scored once after a base hit. The Reds’ Jake Ortiz-Thornton scored the lone run after a base hit and then being sent home on Tallis Onfroy-Curly’s first inning RBI single. The Reds struggled at the plate, but were also held in check by a tough Indians defense, who again retired the side in order twice in both the second and fourth innings.
The week’s best played contest saw the Vintage Truck Dragons get their first win in a close 12–11 decision over the Peach’s Reds on June 10. The teams combined for 23 runs off 45 hits, including five extra base hits. The game was back-and-forth heading into the fifth, with 11 lead changes. The Dragons jumped out to an early 1–0 lead in the top of the first after Gabrielle Perkins singled and then scored off Luka Sage-Frabotta’s base hit. The Reds responded with three second inning runs including an RBI double by Carina Basora that plated Cal Freeman. The Dragons added two more in the third when Josh Clark doubled and then scored on a Ryan Scott base hit, who then scored on an Owen Beitenhaus RBI double. But the Reds survived a Dragons’ surge and put up three runs of their own in the fourth, scoring Cal Freeman and Basora on Areya Harker’s two-run single, followed by Avry Bell-Arment’s groundout RBI that scored Joe Freeman. The Dragons went up 12-7 in a strong fifth inning that spelled defeat for the Reds, as the Dragons grabbed the lead for good, including a two-run Ruthie Meyers single that scored Sam Linden and Ryan Scott. The Reds mounted a final inning rally, scoring four runs in the fifth on a groundout by Max Lugo and two singles before Owen Beitenhaus and Joe Freeman combined on a fielder’s choice final out at second that sealed the victory. Gabrielle Perkins had a perfect 5–5 day at the plate to pace the Dragons, with base hits in all five innings.
The Vintage Truck Dragons finished the week in second at 1–1, followed by the Reds at 1–2 and the Pirates at 0–2.
Meanwhile the Major League Sunrise Café Indians won their pair of games last week and also finished the second week of play at 3-0. And there’s something magical about scoring 17 runs, as that’s what they have done in all three games so far this season.
The Sunrise Café Indians’ first win last week came on June 10, in a 17–14 decision over the Sam and Eddie’s Open Books Reds. They opened up a big lead early, scoring 12 runs in the first three innings. Dylan Rainey led the team with a pair of home runs, a single and four runs scored. Three runs were added by Tyson Housh, Vaughn Hendrickson and Eamonn Cary, who went four for five at the plate with three base hits and a double. Jason Lansing scored twice with Colton Bittner and Pete Freeman each adding a run. The Sam and Eddie’s Open Books Reds were led with two runs each from DeAndre Cowen, Jackson Bleything, Sean Adams and Eli Schell.
The teams met again on June 14, and the Sunrise Café Indians kept the “17” streak alive, winning out this time by a score of 17–7. The Indians bats were hot, with Dylan Rainey leading the way with three runs scored off a walk, a single and a first inning grand slam home run that scored Housh, Hendrickson and Cary. Those three each scored again later in the game, while Pete Freeman and Kai Maruyama each scored a pair of runs with one run each being added by Jason Landing, Deena Green, Matt Duncan and Jeremy Rheinscheld. The Sam and Eddie’s Open Books Reds stated out strong, scoring all seven runs in the first two innings. Sean Adams crossed the plate twice, while De’Andre Cowen, Jackson Belything Dominick Fisher, Dyllan VanHoose and Keldon Harker all scored once each. But then the Indians’ Eamon Cary took the mound in the third inning and held the Reds scoreless, recording nine strikeouts and retiring the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings.
Minor League games are played at 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. on Saturday mornings and Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.; Major League games are played Sundays at 5 p.m. and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. All games are played on the fields in Gaunt Park.
