No charges in Jackson case

Xenia Municipal Court Prosecutor Ron Lewis has declined to press charges against a longtime Yellow Springs High School teacher following a local police investigation into alleged misconduct with a 14-year-old female student, Police Chief Dave Hale said this week.

On Tuesday Hale said he couldn’t comment on the case as he hasn’t yet received the letter from Lewis that explains his response to the investigation, which concluded last week.
YSHS and McKinney School teacher Shawn Jackson was placed on paid admistrative leave on Nov. 12 following a complaint from a 14-year-old student’s family member that Jackson, a 25-year veteran of Yellow Springs schools, had behaved inappropriately toward the girl. YSHS Principal Tim Krier received the complaint and contacted the local police to conduct an investigation, at which point Jackson was put on leave.

While the police investigation is over, a school district investigation is ongoing, District Superintendent Mario Basora said on Tuesday. The investigations have a different focus, according to Basora, because while the police are investigating potentially criminal behavior, the district is looking at possible violations of board policy.

“Any time we investigate, it has to be done fairly and thoroughly,” Basora said. He also stated he didn’t know when the district investigation will end as he is not the one doing the investigating; Basora declined to identify who is conducting the district investigation.

Because the district investigation is ongoing, Jackson will remain on leave, Basora said. His classes are being taught by a substitute.

Jackson could not be reached for comment.
