Parker Quartet performs at Chamber Music in Yellow Springs

Chamber Music in Yellow Springs welcomes back the Parker Quartet for a concert on Sunday, March 12, 7:30 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church.
When the scheduled Meccore String Quartet canceled, CMYS was thrilled to be able to engage the Parker Quartet, currently Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music in Boston. Audiences in the Miami Valley may remember the last performance by this renowned group in 2013. Educated at the New England Conservatory of Music, the quartet plays commissioned as well as classical repertoire and continues to draw inspiration from the members of the Cleveland Quartet who have mentored them over the years. The Parker consists of Daniel Chong and Ying Xue on violin, Jessica Bodner on viola and Kee-Hyun Kim on cello.
The concert will begin with the Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 1, Op. 12 and end with Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 3 in F Major, Op. 73, and feature a contemporary piece in the middle by Augusta Read Thomas. “Helix Spiral for string quartet,” a 2015 piece by Thomas, celebrates the Meselson-Stahl DNA replication experiment. The composer explains that this collaboration between music and science demonstrates how music can be an abstract and intellectual expression of nature. Both the Thomas and the Mendelssohn will be heard in Yellow Springs for the first time. Shostakovich’s Third Quartet — a piece that is said to have made its composer weep when he listened to it being played — will be performed for the second time ever in the Yellow Springs chamber music series.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $7 for students. Information on purchasing advance tickets is available at cmys.org. Beginning at 6:45 p.m., there will be a pre-concert lecture in the church. Those wishing to attend a post-concert dinner with the artists in a local home should contact CMYS at 937-374-8800 at least four days in advance to reserve a place.
Chamber Music in Yellow Springs has arranged an outreach program for the Parker Quartet on Monday morning, March 13, when the musicians will share their process and playing with the children at Mills Lawn Elementary School.
The 2017 CMYS season will conclude on April 23 with the 32nd annual Competition for Emerging Professional Ensembles. Two chamber groups will compete for the grand prize, and audiences will witness young professionals at work, performing programs of their own choosing, and will learn the results from the panel of prestigious guest judges that evening.
