The McKinney and YSHS theater departments will expand their offerings this fall with the first Bulldog Theater Festival, which will bring two theatrical performances to local audiences.

“There has been such great turnout for the fall play over the last two years, larger roles often went to more experienced students.,” said McKinney theater instructor Lorrie Sparrow-Knapp. “We wanted to find a way to highlight our young artists as well as give them more opportunity earlier.”

McKinney eighth graders will join YSHS students to present Luke Yankee’s “The Last Lifeboat,” directed by Sparrow-Knapp, Thursday–Saturday, Oct. 26–28, at 8 p.m., with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, at Mills Lawn. The play tells the story of the man who built, then survived the sinking of, the Titanic.

YSHS juniors and seniors will present Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice,” which tells the Greek myth of Orpheus from the perspective of his wife, the play’s namesake. The production will be directed by YSHS alumnus Kayla Graham, Thursday–Saturday, Nov. 2–4, at 8 p.m., with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, at the Glen Helen Vernet Ecological Center.

Each production will run only one weekend; tickets may be purchased at the door for $12 — students and seniors are $7 — for each performance. A Bulldog Theater Festival ticket, good for both weekends of performances, is $20.
