November 30, 2017 Bulldog sports round-up

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Greetings, winter sports fans! As Yellow Springs High School prepares to kick off the winter season, we’re taking a look at last year and looking ahead to this one. Competitions for all teams began the last week of November.

Girls basketball is dealing with the loss of key seniors Elizabeth Smith and Julian Roberts. Smith, a likely Yellow Springs hall-of-famer, scored her 1000th point last season and led the attack for the Lady Bulldogs. Last year’s team finished with a record of 13 wins and 10 losses. While the losses of those seniors will be felt, the team retained Ayanna Madison and Dede Cheatom, both of whom were in the top five rebounders in the conference. Also returning are Jasmine Davidson, Gracie Price and Amani Wagner — all seniors who should make an impact. Excitingly, the Lady Bulldogs are also fielding a Junior Varsity squad for the first time in four years. Coached by Tim Minnich, Kerry Crouch and Morgan Minnich, the Lady Bulldogs should have an interesting season. Their first game was Nov. 27 at Springfield.

The boys basketball team lost seniors Joseph Plumer and Augie Knemeyer, both of whom were varsity starters and had major leadership roles. However, First Team All-Conference point guard Andrew Clark is returning, as is Second Team All-Conference player Tony Marinelli. Also returning as seniors are Donnie Isenbarger, James Browning, Zachary Brintlinger-Conn, Christian Elam and Clay Cooper. While last year the squad posted a disappointing record of 5 wins and 18 losses, the Bulldogs look to be greatly improved this year, and hopes are high for the season. Coached by Bobby Crawford and Phil Renfro, the team plays its first game on Dec. 1 at home.

Yellow Springs High School is welcoming back the bowling team for its second year. Last year’s seniors, Duard Headley and Windom Mesure, are gone, but the Bulldogs can look forward to a much-improved season as the entire team gets more experience. Coached by Matt Cole, the bowling team has its first contest Nov. 30 at Middletown Christian.

Last but not least is the Yellow Springs swimming team. The girls will miss their ace, Olivia Chick, who has committed to swim at Michigan State. They will also lack Hannah Morrison. The boys squad will be missing Tristan Giardullo this year. However, standout Eden Spriggs should return this year, along with David Walker for the boys. The Yellow Springs girls look to defend their conference title this year. Coached by Bradley Martin, the Bulldogs’ first meet is Dec. 8 at the Dayton Raiders Aquatic Center.
