John Merrow, a longtime, now retired, award-winning PBS NewsHour education correspondent, will be in Yellow Springs later this month to speak about the state of public education and his recommendations for improving our schools.

The author of the recently published book “Addicted to Reform: A 12-Step Program to Rescue Public Education,” Merrow will give a presentation, including a period for questions and answers, from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Greene County Educational Service Center, next door to Yellow Springs High School, at 360 E. Enon Road. Sign-in begins at 3:30 p.m., and light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

Published in 2017, “Addicted to Reform” has been received with praise.

“Finally someone has the courage to bar the door, stare them down, and do an intervention on the stumbling school reformers still clinging to their cocktail of privatize, standardize, and de-professionalize, wrote Lilly Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association. She continued: “John Merrow reveals the destructive truth behind these toxic reforms, and his twelve steps lead to the sacred purpose of education: to humanize connections; to deepen understanding; to know how to form a fine question and question your own conclusions. This is a good book. You should read it. Twice.”

Merrow’s other works include: “Choosing Excellence,” from 2001; “Below C Level,” from 2010; and “The Influence of Teachers,” 2011.

With a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Merrow began his journalism career with National Public Radio in 1974. His varied honors include the George Polk Award, the Peabody Award, and the McGraw Prize.

Registration to attend the Feb. 28 presentation is requested by emailing wwooten@greeneesc.org with the following information: name, title, name of organization and email address. Certificate of Attendance/Contact Hour Certificate is available for educators.
