Juneteenth celebration to be held

Central Chapel AME Church and First Baptist Church will present this year’s Juneteenth celebration at Central Chapel, located at 411 S. High St., on Tuesday, June 19, beginning at 6 p.m.
Juneteenth recognizes June 19, 1865, when the final group of enslaved African Americans, in Texas, learned that they were free — over two months after the end of the Civil War and two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
This year’s program will include a potluck meal; a meat dish will be provided, and side dishes or desserts are appreciated. The program will feature a screening of the documentary “Unchained Memories,” which dramatizes excerpts from the Slave Narratives, interviews conducted in the 1930s with elders who were born into slavery. Conducted by the Federal Writers’ Project, the Narratives are a rich record of firsthand accounts of enslavement. A discussion will follow the film.
