Women’s Park to be honored

Villagers are invited to take part in a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Women’s Park of Yellow Springs, which was launched in July, 1998. The event takes place at the park, adjacent to the Little Miami Bike Trail near Corry Street and Grinnell Road, on Sunday, July 1, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Wildflower and pollinator walks will also be included in the event.
The inspiration of longtime villager Gene Trolander, the Women’s Park was created by a group of local feminists who sought a place to honor women. Following the donation of a long, narrow strip of land from the Village, the women began selling tiles to honor individual women, with personalized descriptive statements on each tile. Over the years, more than 800 tiles have been designed and created by local potter Evelyn LaMers.
The park also includes a colorful variety of flowers and decorative grasses, along with a large metal sculpture of flowers and several commemorative benches.
Right on the bike path, the Women’s Park attracts visitors regularly.
“Anytime I’m here, people stop by to look,” Deb Henderson, one of the park’s creators, said in a recent interview. “They say, thank you.”
