Yellow Springs recognized as bike friendly community

On Wednesday evening, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate Yellow Springs becoming the 17th community in Ohio to be recognized as a bronze-level bicycle-friendly community. The award comes from the League of American Bicyclists which evaluates communities based on a number of criteria related to bike-friendliness.

Yellow Springs is the only community in Ohio to have won the award while being designated a “small town.” Most other winners are urban areas like Columbus or Cincinnati though two rural communities, Athens and Oberlin have also been recognized. No community in Ohio has above a bronze-level recognition.

The organization evaluated Yellow Springs’ based on several criteria which were organized into five categories rated on a one-to-ten scale. The village’s scores ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 and recommendations were given to help improve scores and qualify for silver-level recognition.

“Personally, I’m motivated for us to become the first silver in Ohio,” said Brian Housh, President of the Village Council who also works at the local Rails to Trails branch.

Housh also wanted to thank the Yellow Springs Active Transportation Committee and Bike Yellow Springs, the local chapter of Bike Miami Valley, for their help in securing the award.

“This is a pretty rare thing,” he said, “Without all of these citizen groups supporting us, it would be very hard for us to do.”
