The Tom’s Market Pirates looked impressive, taking the Minor League season opener over the Peach’s Dodgers 16–8 on Saturday, June 9.

The Pirates scored four runs in each of the first two innings while holding the Dodgers scoreless before giving up a pair of runs in the top of the third on RBI base hits by Ben Morris and Tiger Collins that scored Javin Obringer and Theo Collins. The Pirates exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles from Tavey Johnson, Bryce Fleming, Tyler Blair and Nakaye and Nylaiyah Miley and a two-RBI double by Sherrod Wheeler. The Dodgers responded in their final inning with a six-run rally thanks to a two-run RBI double by Morris and RBI singles from Tiger Collins, Tomé Rios, Emil Lazar and Henry Carr, but the Pirates defense ended the game with an impressive double play when Malini Miller lined out to Tavey Johnson who then threw to Oskar Dennis at second to double up Henry Carr.

Previously, despite getting only a single hit, the Major League Yellow Springs Toy Company Pirates’ aggressive base running led them to their first victory of the year, a 9-3 decision over the Adoption Link Braves on Monday, June 4. Nine players accounted for 29 stolen bases, with Violet Babb and Dylan Reed each stealing six times and scoring twice. Jaymon Lange and Cal Freeman both scored a run off three stolen bases, while Hazen VanMeter, Derek Reed and rookie Ethan Reynolds-Coe each added a run.  Pitchers Derek Reed, Hazen VanMeter and Frank Machi combined for nine strike-outs and only three walks. Meanwhile, Joslyn Herring led the Adoption Link Braves with a pair of runs scored off four stolen bases, with De’Andre Cowen stealing three times and crossing the plate once.

The Adoption Link Braves regrouped and came out swinging later in the week when they overpowered the Sunrise Café Indians 14–8 on Thursday, June 7. The Braves pounded out 17 hits and were led by Noah VanHoose, who went 5–5 at the plate with three singles, a double, a triple, four runs scored and an RBI. Krishan Miller scored three times off a single, double and a walk. Colin Linderman and De’Andre Cowen each scored twice, while Sam Miller, Sam Linden and Nyke Miley all crossed the plate once. Braves’ Pitchers Cowen and Miller combined for 11 strike outs, giving up only six walks. The Indians’ Sophie Lawson tagged Cowen for a first-inning three-run home run. Nick Morris scored twice off a pair of base hits while Jake Ortiz-Thornton went one-for-two and scored twice. Mateo Basora, Lucas Dunn and Justin Nash all added one run each.
