CROSS-COUNTRY

Bulldogs run well at Graham Invite

Buoyed by top 20 finishes by six different Bulldogs in each of the meet’s races, the YSHS/McKinney cross country teams performed successfully at the Graham Invitational.

A top-three team finish by the McKinney Boys team was one highlight of the meet. The McKinney boys team ran a great race that included 98 runners. The team was led by seventh-grader Isaac Grushon, in seventh place, and Krishan Miller, in eighth place, who both ran the course in under 13 minutes.

Ben Espinosa (19), Ethan Knemeyer (27) and Kael Cooney (54) solidified our team’s finish. Each of the remaining Bulldog runners achieved personal bests in the hot and humid weather with the following places: Luka Sage-Frabotta (68), Josh Clark (69), Jason Knemeyer (71), Jack Horvath (73), Liam McClean (81), J.P. Anderson (82), Max Lugo (85) Otto Cipollini (87) and Tallis Onfroy-Curley (89).

The McKinney girls were once again led by Cheyan Sundell-Turner, who earned the highest finish of the day with a solid fifth place out of 56 competitors and a season-best time of 13:58. She was complimented by Josie Dewine (38).

The YSHS boys’ team with a full contingent of nine runners ran to a 12th-place team finish among 113 runners. Senior Zach Lugo ran to a 17th-place finish in a time of 19:27. Fellow senior Mark Bricker, returning from a track injury, placed 52nd.  The remaining Bulldogs ran in a tight formation that led to a bevy of season-best efforts: Eli Capasso (72), Jay Millman (79), Leif Walters (80), Jackson Bleything (81), Gideon Naziri (90), Griffin Roberts (100) and Harper Mesure (112).

Senior Jude Meekin in her first race of the year led a trio of YSHS girls teammates with a 12th-place effort (24:19) and provided strong leadership to junior Evelyn Potter (21) and ninth-grader Avery Reeder (26).

The Bulldogs will compete at the Bellbrook Invitational on Saturday.

SOCCER

Girls soccer suffers pair of losses

The YSHS girls soccer team suffered a couple of disappointing home losses in the last week, falling to Legacy Christian on Friday night and then to Stivers on Tuesday.

Though the spirit of Homecoming was in the air on Friday night, it wasn’t enough to help the Bulldogs escape the seemingly laser-guided shots on goal from Legacy Christian. The Bulldogs went into halftime trailing 6–0. The Bulldogs had a renewed sense of purpose in the second half, holding the Knights to only two goals, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the first half’s deficit.

Against the Stivers Tigers, the Bulldogs fared a bit better defensively, but just couldn’t quite find an offensive spark.  Trailing 2–0 at halftime, the Bulldogs showed glimpses of coordinated attacks, particularly by junior Sayre Hudson and freshman Myrah Burton, but to no end, ultimately falling 3–0.

VOLLEYBALL

JV volleyball bounces back for first win

The YSHS girls JV volleyball team has been working hard over the past weeks. They suffered a tough loss to non-conference Northeastern on Saturday, Sept. 8. However, the Bulldogs bounced back from that loss with their first win of the season over Dayton Christian on Thursday, Sept. 13. The Bulldogs came out fighting in the first set, hanging on to win 25–23. In the second set, the players struggled a bit to receive serves, dropping the set 13–25. However, the Bulldogs came roaring back in the third set and won 25–18.

The players showed grit and determination in their play. Freshmen Ava Schell had three service aces, and played outstanding defense. Schell picked up passes and digs all over the court and had several kills. Sophomore Haneefah Jones brought a strong arm, earning several impressive kills throughout the match. Sophomore Ateerys Wagner served up seven aces, and racked up assists as the Bulldogs aggressively attacked the ball.

Freshmen Devyn Deal and Leanna Taylor and juniors Krista Romohr and Beck Kline contributed much needed hustle and team spirit. It was a fantastic match and a much-deserved win for the Bulldogs. The next home match for the JV team is Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. against Fairborn.
