SOCCER

Soccer finishes up regular season

According to the Metro Buckeye Conference website, the Yellow Springs High School boys soccer team lost its final conference game of the season against Dayton Christian, 2–0, on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at home. 

The boys team went on to win its first postseason game, a 10–0 defeat over Southeastern on Monday, Oct. 15.

The YSHS girls team also played its final regular game of the season, to Newton at home on Oct. 11; the results of the game were not reported at press time. They lost earlier in the week to Dayton Christian by a score of 5–2.

CROSS COUNTRY

McKinney boys win conference title

The McKinney boys cross country team won the Metro Buckeye Conference title this past Friday, Oct. 12, at the MBC meet held at the Cedarville University. 

The Bulldog pack impressed with an incredible team effort and everyone giving their best. Their efforts paid off, not only with the conference title but also with many personal all-time best times. 

Isaac Grushon (12:08) in third, Krishan Miller (12:10) in fourth and Ben Espinosa (12:37) in sixth place were named first team all-conference and led the Bulldogs to victory.

Ethan Knemeyer (13:00), Samuel Telawny-Cassity (13:03), Dylon Mapes (13:53), Josh Clark (14:36), Kael Cooney (14:36), Jack Hovath (14:37), Luka Sage-Frobotta (14:55), JP Anderson (15:13), Jason Knemeyer (15:17), Max Lugo (15:22), Liam McClean (15:52), Tallis Onfroy-Curley (17:04) and Otto Cipollini (17:52) fought furiously and contributed to the success by displacing competitors.

Sundell-Turner back-to-back champ

Lady Bulldog runner Cheyan Sundell-Turner left no doubt on the grassy track last Friday who the fastest middle school girl is in the MBC conference and impressively defended the MBC middle school girls champion title from last year in a time of 12:55. Sundell-Turner’s teammate, Josie DeWine, joined her on the MBC middle school girls all-conference team with a fifth-place finish and a huge all-time personal best, smashing the 15-minute barrier in a time of 14:32.

YSHS runners ready for districts

The varsity girls team placed third as a team, led by freshman Avery Reeder (22:25), placing sixth and earning all-league first-team honors.

Junior Evelyn Potter (22:45), in eighth place, and senior Jude Meekin (23:29), in  11th place, earned second team all-league status with new personal-record times. 

Tahlia Potter (24:27), Haneefah Jones (29:58) and Sokhna Sene (35.25) completed the Lady Bulldog team.

Senior Zach Lugo (18:31) earned second team all-conference honors with an 11th place. Senior Mark Bricker has definitely left his injury in the past and showed off with a 13th-place finish in a time of 18:46, also earning second all-conference honors.

Jay Millman (20:46), Raven Campbell (20:51), Eli Capasso (21:51), Gideon Naziri, Griffin Roberts and Harper Mesure all ran a strong race and posted seasonal best times.
 

Head coach Isabelle Dierauer commented, “It is incredible how far all the kids have come this season.” She contributes the great success to the kids’ strong work ethic.

“They made us coaches really proud today,” Dierauer said.

According to Assistant Coach John Gudgel, Dierauer’s superior workout planning skills and ability to connect with the kids also are ingredients to the secret sauce that made the team so successful.

VOLLEYBALL

JV season ends on a high note

The YSHS JV volleyball team ended on a high note with a win against Stivers last week. The Bulldogs showed tremendous improvement over the course of the season.

Leanna Taylor and Krista Romohr each had two blocks last week. Ava Schell played phenomenal defense and offense. Haneefah Jones showed her athleticism with crucial kills and serves. Ateerys Wagner led the team with assists. Zay Crawford and Bek Kline added needed support at the net and in the back row. Devyn Deal contributed much needed digs and passes. The ladies worked hard all season long. Way to go, Bulldogs!

Varsity caps stellar season with a win

The varsity volleyball team concluded its regular season at home against Stivers on Thursday, Oct. 10. Playing without middle hitter/blocker Alex Ronnebaum, who was out with an illness, the small Bulldog squad got off to a slow start but came on strong to win the match in three sets, 25–23, 25–17, 25–17.

Despite falling behind several times throughout the first two sets, the Yellow Springs players stepped up their intensity when they felt they needed to in order to win the set. Every Bulldog player contributed to the win, with Tyler Linkhart leading the way by putting down 16 kills and one ace along with putting up 11 assists and 12 digs. Emma Ronnebaum had a great night of play with 12 kills, five aces, 13 assists, one block and 17 digs. Aaliyah Longshaw,  who has really come on in the last few games, had three kills, one ace, four assists, one block and four digs, while Angelina Smith and Annlyn Foster each put down two kills, with Smith scoring six aces along with eight digs while Foster had two aces, three blocks and 12 digs. Olivia Snoddy kept up her skillful serving with four aces, one kill, two assists and five digs.

The Bulldogs finished the regular season with an 18–2 record and as Metro Buckeye Conference Champions with an undefeated conference season of 12–0.
