On a recent rainy Friday, the News rode along with Rob Nangle, Yellow Springs’ locally famous UPS driver. After 26 years on the Yellow Springs route, Nangle is retiring at the end of May.

Nangle has been a “positive presence” in so many villagers’ lives, according to Gilah Pomeranz of Yellow Springs Hardware. “He always has a smile, always has a great story,” she said.

Nangle’s last day driving the big brown truck through Yellow Springs will be Wednesday, May 29. Downtown merchants, local residents and anyone else who wants to say a fond farewell to Nangle are encouraged to take part in an informal “wave-off” scheduled for 12:10 p.m. on May 29. Simply show up downtown and wave as Nangle rolls down Xenia Avenue for the last time. Signs and banners are encouraged. Mayor Pam Conine will present a mayoral proclamation to thank Nangle for his years of smiling service to Yellow Springs.

The photos below show a glimpse of Nangle in action. An in-depth story about ‘Rob the UPS man’ appears in the May 16 issue of the News.
