Pirates keep up winning streak

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Despite last week’s return of wet weather playing havoc with the rec baseball schedule, the Tom’s Market Pirates solidified their early season minor league lead, winning a pair of games to remain undefeated at 4-0. They notched their first victory on Wednesday, June 12, with an 18–6 win over the Peach’s Dodgers. The score was tied at 1–1 after the first inning before the Pirates pulled away for good in the second with a pair of RBI singles by Bryce Fleming and Tavey Johnson. The Pirates went on to score in every inning, adding four third-inning runs, three in the fourth and a big seven-run final inning. Orion Sage-Frabotta went five-for-five at the plate with two singles, three doubles and two RBIs. Tyler Blair racked up five RBIs off his three base hits and a double, while Sherrod Wheeler’s three doubles and a single resulted in four RBIs. Every Pirate had at least one hit and one run scored, including rookies Allee Bayard and Wyatt Nilsson. The Peach’s Dodgers finished the day with 14 total hits, led by a perfect day at the plate by Lucas Mikesell’s two singles and a double, resulting in three RBIs. Charlie Carr, Alex Amin and Ben Morris also added an RBI each from their plate appearances.

The Tom’s Market Pirates then went on to outlast a tough Nipper’s Corner Yankees team on Saturday, June 15, with a 14–9 win.  Orion Sage-Frabotta was clutch at the plate with runners on base, driving in four runs on three hits, including a first inning single, a triple in the third and a double in the fourth. The Pirates put up four first-inning runs before both teams held each other scoreless in the second. The Yankees then took the lead with five in the third, thanks to a Noelle Fisher RBI single to score Emery Fodal, Henry Lake’s RBI single to score Mark Meyer and load the bases for Sameer Sajabi’s three-run RBI triple that scored Meyer, Zander Breza and Lake. But the Pirates responded with four more runs in their half of the third to take the lead for good, while adding another six runs in the fourth. Nakye Miley, Sage-Frabotta and Sherrod Wheeler all went three-for-three at the plate, including Wheeler’s third inning two-run home run that also scored Tyler Blair. The Yankees put up a strong four run final inning rally off RBI singles from Lake, Sameer Sajabi, Nico Sajabi and Vincent Machi to score Meyer, Breza, Fisher and Lake.  But the Pirate defense stiffened with a pair of fielder’s choice plays and a ground out to Wheeler to seal the win.

In Saturday’s second game, Henry Babb was clutch at the plate with runners on base, driving in four on three hits to lead Sam and Eddie’s Open Books Brewers past the Peach’s Dodgers, 15–3. He drove in runs on base hits in the second and third innings and a double in the fourth. The Dodgers took an early lead on Lucas Mikesell’s first inning RBI single to score Tomé Rios after his earlier base hit. But the Brewers pulled away with a five run second inning on RBI singles from Logan Herzog, Babb, Naima Jones and Joey Amend. The Brewers added another six runs in the third on RBI singles from Theo Collins, Babb, Lili Herzog, Naima and Jaida Jones and Luc Amend.  Lili Herzog led the team with a perfect four-for-four day at the plate, resulting in two RBI’s and three runs scored off three base hits and a double. The Dodgers saw the ball well at the plate, finishing with 10 hits. Henry Carr, Lucas Mikesell and Tomé Rios all went two-for-three at the plate.

The Brewers finished the week in second place at 2–1, a game-and-a-half behind the Pirates, while the Dodgers are in third at 1–3 and the Yankees in fourth at 0–3.

The week’s wet weather resulted in no Major League games being played. The Sunrise Café Orioles remain atop the standings at 2–0, followed by the Adoption Link Dodgers at 1–1 and the Ye Olde Trail Tavern Cardinals at 0–2.

Minor League games are played Saturday mornings and Monday and Wednesday evenings, with Major League games on Monday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. See the league website at http://www.ysbaseball.org for the full schedule, updates, results and standings for both leagues.
