Agraria Journal Winter 2021
AGRARIA JOURNAL 2021 39 KIARA KAMARA Kiara Kamara joined Agraria in October as its new Digital Outreach Coordinator. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, they are finishing up their undergraduate degree at Earlham College with a major in environmental sustainability. In addition to their studies, Kiara is a Bonner scholar dedicated to community service and engaging with their local food system through tending to the campus farm. In the summer of 2021, Kiara worked with the communications department of Rodale Institute to launch a storytelling campaign for BIPOC farmers. “During my time there,” says Kiara, “I developed a deep appreciation and love for regenerative organic agriculture and the myriad ways it can strengthen communities and enrich our soil.” Kiara’s favorite pastimes are baking, listening to podcasts, and cultivating community through storytelling and moments of togetherness. “I am thrilled to join the staff at Agraria as the new Digital Outreach Coordinator,” says Kiara. MATTHEW SALAZAR A Yellow Springs native, Matthew Salazar has finally returned to living in the village after a 10-year spell of living in more far-flung reaches of the country. His background in outdoor recreation and natural resource conservation led him to positions in exotic and exciting locations, including Arkansas, New Hampshire, Reno, Nevada, and Alaska. Like many villagers, however, the vortex of Yellow Springs has once again pulled him back into the fold. Most recently, Matthew finished up a master's degree in outdoor recreation and education from Ohio University and then spent the summer living in the woods teaching children about wilderness survival skills. He's very much looking forward to re-establishing roots back home, while also continuing to improve the facilities and land management practices at Agraria. Matthew’s future plans revolve around continuing to work in regenerative agriculture in Yellow Springs, whether that be at home or the workplace. Interests include being outside, doing crossword puzzles, and long walks on Enon Beach.
