Agraria Journal Winter 2021
AGRARIA JOURNAL 2021 47 Arthur Morgan Award At this year’s annual “Pathways to Regeneration” conference, held in November, we gave the Arthur Morgan Award to Dr. Kelsey Leonard for her work on water justice. Dr. Leonard is a water scientist, legal scholar, policy expert, writer, and enrolled citizen of the Shinnecock Nation. She is currently Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. Her work focuses on Indigenous water justice and its climatic, territorial, and governance underpinnings for our shared sustainable future. Dr. Leonard represents the Shinnecock Nation on the Mid-Atlantic Committee on the Ocean, which is charged with protecting America's ocean ecosystems and coastlines. The Arthur Morgan Award recognizes individuals who possess the traits that Morgan wrote about: character, vision, entrepreneurship, and love of community. Previous awardees have included Rowen White, Helena Norberg-Hodge, Jim Merkel, Stephanie Mills, and William Beale. Pathways to Regeneration Conference The power of communities to heal their water, to share hope in times of calamity, and to literally bring parched landscapes to life was the focus of this year’s Pathways to Regeneration: Honoring Water conference. Attendees heard powerful stories of mutual aid networks, regreening deserts, resisting pipelines, and redesigning new systems for water saving and sharing. While acknowledging the many challenges to the health and availability of water— from corporations, conventional agriculture, and aging infrastructure—the conversation was one of empowerment and hope. Sprinkled throughout was the recognition from speakers and attendees alike that water is alive and a relative to be cherished.
