14 AGRARIA JOURNAL 2022 When August arrives, the land brings forth an abundance of opportunities for our senses. Shifting toward fall, letting myself be present to the abundance is an intentional gift I give myself in a world of distraction. When I (re)remember the natural world is the “real” world and give it my attention, I can live my best life. And if I can do it with others — with my family, with my community, in programs, with children — all the better. Choosing a path onto land, a breath of fragrant air fills me, the sight of vibrant earthy colors awakens a primal peacefulness, and I become acutely aware of the bustling life on this land, each sound a clue to a creature in movement. I spy a plump blackberry amidst the patchwork of green, inviting me to pluck it from among its thorns. I reach in, the risk of thorny scratches an afterthought, my fingertips pinch the warm, slightly bruised berry, releasing a scent A Sensory Tour with The Land School BY KAT CHRISTEN MAUREEN FELLINGER Preschoolers in the Little Herbalist summer camp make music to thank the plants for their medicinal gifts. The plants like loud and soft music and the kids joyously oblige.
