He received his masters in econom- ics and operations research from Berkeley in 1966. Soon he was build- ing healthcare information compa- nies and, in 1974, he founded and served as CEO of SysteMetrics, Inc., one of the first outcomes research companies, which was acquired by McGraw-Hill in 1982. From 1986 to 1994 he was founder and CEO of Decision Support Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shared Medical Systems, which conducted research using healthcare transaction data and provided software and services to U.S. and European hospitals. From 1994 to 1999, he was CEO of Oacis Healthcare Systems, a leading sup- plier of advanced real-time clini- cal information systems for large provider organizations. The com- pany went public in 1996 and was acquired by Science Applications International in March of 1999. He was chairman and chief executive officer of Fast Track Systems, Inc. He also consulted for a variety of orga- nizations including DHHS and the Institute of Medicine, and served on the Board of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network. Jim married classmate Mary Jane Gaston, ’65, and they had two chil- dren, Holly and Scott.They lived in Goleta, Calif., for nearly 30 years un- til their separation when Jim moved to the San Francisco area. He contin- ued to reside there with his second wife for a few years until his death from brain cancer.
