One of the largest of these cases we won last year and for a second we are awaiting the award but hope also to win. We also assist the Corruption Eradication Commission and advise major state-owned companies such as Pertamina, the national oil and gas company, and Jasa Marga, the toll- road operator. In about 1986, I hooked up with an Australian ex-diplomat and then energy and mining administra- tor,Tim Scott, and we have been to- gether ever since.Tim and John have two daughters each from prior mar- riages, so I have four remote step- daughters and get along very well with all, but I have no children of my own. I have never regretted that, as it leaves me free of that kind of responsibility and that kind of stress. My father passed away in 1988 and my mother in 2009, so I now rarely get back to the U.S. We live a bit out of town (which requires an inordinate amount of time in horrendous traffic to and from the office) in a lovely place that Tim built for us about 15 years ago, set practically in a bamboo and palm jungle with lots of wildlife around. For a while we had a string of pet owls, but the bird flu took too many away so we now settle for a couple of cats. But we still hear owls now and then around the place, as well as kingfishers and a zillion other bird species. Unfortunately retirement is still out of the question, and I will prob- ably be working as long as I remain compos mentis. But it’s mostly inter- esting work and there is plenty of time for trips to Bali and the lovely thousand islands offshore Jakarta, as well as to New Zealand where we spend a month or so every year in a little 1840s bungalow we renovated and set by the sea, so I can’t com- plain.
