Except for nine months in the Army following graduate school,my entire career has been in the transporta- tion industry—as an executive with rail, trucking and third-party logistics companies and as a partner in sev- eral management consulting com- panies focusing on projects with transportation enterprises around the world. By working with many types of companies in more than 50 coun- tries and by visiting an additional 100 countries, I’ve gained a reason- ably good understanding of the way in which business operates around the world. I’ve also found that peo- ple of all cultures, religions and in- come levels are always interesting and usually friendly and well-inten- tioned. This knowledge, combined with the liberal education and sensi- tivities I gained at Antioch, balanced in part with Harvard’s focus on busi- ness education, has left me a social liberal and an economic conserva- tive. I’ve been officially retired for five years, but I continue working about 30% of the time on consult- ing projects. My wife of 30 years, Betsy, and I continue to travel quite a bit and enjoy not having to get up early every day to go to work. We’re healthy and hope to remain so for many years. We support the renewal Antioch College and hope that its upward trajectory continues in a tur- bulent time for institutions of higher education. Finally, like many others, we remain very frustrated at the childish behavior of our elected rep- resentatives in Washington when so many common-sense actions need to be implemented.
