After leaving ETS my profes- sional work shifted to independent consulting in educational research for a variety of nonprofit educa- tional organizations. Now, in 2014, I do modest amounts of this con- sulting. In 2005, I participated in a very challenging yoga teacher train- ing program with one of my favorite teachers, Todd Norian. Since then I have been teaching yoga and, over that time,making an ever-deepening professional commitment to it. Personally, my life has changed considerably over the last decade. I have found a new partner, Michael Robbins, a psychoanalyst/psychi- atrist. Our deeply committed re- lationship has changed my life in many ways. I now live near him in Amherst, Mass.We spend summers in Rangeley, Me. Both of my sons have interesting, fulfilling careers and have found loving partners. My older son and his wife, Meredith, have a lovely, lively son, Aden, now 10.My younger son and his husband, Gary, are in the process of adopting a child. As I look back on my life and on Antioch’s contribution to it, I ask myself whether I have won any vic- tories for humanity. I love Antioch for reminding me to ask myself that question regularly. The answer: I don’t know. But I do know that my work in educational research has always focused on understanding how to help children to learn more deeply and be more engaged in that learning. And what about the yoga teach- ing? Certainly it represents a very different direction from my earlier career, in almost every way. And if I am winning any victories for human- ity in this work, it is one person at a time. I have seen some remarkable transformations in some of my yoga students. But the credit is not mine to take.The work, however, is deeply gratifying. And, like my research ca- reer, it enables me to expand my learning and expertise. Stepping back a bit, Antioch helped me make my own way through life, with courage, determi- nation, flexibility and an entrepre- neurial spirit.For this, and much else, I am deeply grateful.
