The easiest task is to sum- marize work:Went to Chicago for a law degree and then taught at the uni- versity level for several years (to avoid the draft). Landed in Salinas, Calif., as a public defender but stopped after four years because it was too stress- ful and sad.For almost 40 years I prac- ticed estate planning which was very satisfying—challenging, helping cli- ents in a meaningful way and not cen- tered on confrontation and conflict. Two years ago I closed my prac- tice except for one client where I oversee philanthropy and invest- ments. The transition was appro- priately complex and challenging. But I am hitting a pretty good stride now, learning guitar (and rock-n-roll singing) and becoming a docent at Point Lobos nearby. And spending more time with Marian, our kids and friends. We live in Carmel which has been a great place to raise a family and enjoy life. I do lots of trail hiking (sadly retired from running), road and mountain biking and surfing (more recently only when I can find wa- ters warmer than Carmel!). And we travel lots, e.g., off to southern India for three weeks next month. I have been truly fortunate to have had a good life so far. I have a wonderful wife/partner of 43 years, Marian Penn, herself an attor- ney and a nonprofit consultant. And two great kids, David, a psychiatrist (Harvard, Mass. General), and Josh (UCLA), a commercial and creative film director. No grandchildren yet but we are rooting for them. For the most part, illness and tragedy have been mercifully rare. We are all pretty healthy though Marian and I realize the path for- ward will be different. I have so many good memories of my Antioch experience and hope life has been good for myAntioch friends. Regards to all.
