167 AN T I OC H CO L L E G E C L A S S O F 19 6 5 5 0 t h A N N I V E R S A R Y B O O K T R A N U M and scattered from Dublin to San Francisco, paid my farewell respects to grandparent and parents, reveled in the joy of grandchildren, now six and eight, I find myself perched high over Charles River in Harvard Square in a sun-washed aerie, enjoy- ing—no, positively reveling in—my eighth decade in a golden haze of contentment and delight. With retirement not even a glim- mer in my eye, I continue to com- mute twice a month to St. Thomas, as I have for the past 20 years or more—and yes, that’s twelve mil- lion miles on American Airlines! There I continue to actively operate several small but productive busi- nesses which, together with a small operation in Portland, Me., keep the wolves from my door. Between crises I’ve sailed from Trinidad to Newfoundland and Alaska, and south to the Antarctic Circle, where I spent this past February with friends aboard a 75- foot aluminum sloop chartered out of Ushuaia,Argentina. Plunging into the glories of fu- ture decades, I look back on my Antioch years as perhaps the most exciting and meaningful period of my now long, long life—a hurdle over the fairly stratospheric bar of a wild, chaotic and exciting life filled with adventure, challenge, and growth, fifty years that have ca- reened wildly from suicidal to eu- phoric, from dazzling to desperate, from pedestrian to productive. But never, ever, ever...boring! As to old Antioch friends, while there are of course a few, I stand guilty of failing to nourish relation- ships from the past. Is it too late? If I appear at our 50th, will I be for- given? Passing through Yellow Springs this past April, the college seemed to be ricocheting off its lows, showing signs of promise and life... Who knows?
