At the time of his death, the family created the Shelton H. Davis Scholarship Fund at the Maya Education Foundation, which pro- vides educational opportunities for indigenous people in Central America (mayaedufound.org ). I (Bernie) have strong personal memories of Sandy;we were life-long friends. We roomed together from our second year to graduation and even went on AEA to the U.K. at the same time in our fourth year, 1963– 64; he went to the London School of Economics, and I to Edinburgh. He introduced me to Jane during that year, and the three of us were the “Jules y Jim” characters of the fa- mous ’60s movie. One of my favor- ite memories of Sandy was from our first year at Antioch when he tele- phoned home from the pay phone in our dorm hallway. We heard him ask the operator to place a “person-to- person collect call” to his dad, then listen for a while, and then hang up the phone with a crestfallen look on his usually smiling face. What hap- pened? He told us that his dad an- swered the phone, refused to accept the charges, and told the operator, “Tell him to write!” He was a serious scholar. After his death, his colleagues, friends and family put together a special issue of Tipiti: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America , Volume 9, Issue 2, 2012.The photo above, of Sandy with pipe, was taken in Rochester, N.Y., in the mid-1960s. May his memory be for a blessing to all who knew him; his life’s work touched many people.
