In Boston I worked at Arthur D Little and in the Bronx I worked in B.L. Horecker’s lab at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and fi- nally I worked at a small electron- ics company in Pasadena, Calif. The location is now a freeway intersec- tion, not far away from my sister’s house (Wendy Lang, Antioch, ’61). One of my more embarrassing times in Yellow Springs was when J.D. Dawson had to send his secretary to Springfield to bail me out of jail, having been caught in a speed trap trying to take friends to the train sta- tion. I can still hear him say.... “the life you save may be your own, so drive carefully.” Part of my college education, but I was so very happy to be back on campus. J.D was a great friend and mentor. I went to graduate school at Virginia Tech, where I received a Ph.D. in biochemistry and nutrition, studying enzymes that hydrolyze cel- lulose. I had the wonderful experi- ence of working on the nutritional survey of the Dominican Republic and also visited the “mothercraft centers” in Haiti which were de- signed to teach mothers of malnour- ished children which locally avail- able foods they should put together to help their child get a nutrition- ally complete meal. People back at VT analyzed amino acid profiles of various local foods so the diet would have enough of each of the essential amino acids. After graduation, I headed west to Berkeley and worked at the Western Regional Research Lab of the U.S. Department of Agriculture studying an alpha amylase inhibitor in wheat, among other things. I con- tinued these studies when I moved over to the nutritional sciences de- partment at University of California at Berkeley. I also developed meth- ods for determining nutrient require- ments and nutrient interactions. In 1973 I had the good fortune of meet- ing and falling in love with Nancy Merrell and we have been together ever since. She and her partners had a needle craft business and we went to Haiti to teach the technique and have display models made for Nancy’s company. It turned out the company which made these mod- els was started by a guy who had worked in Haiti for WHO, then mar- ried a Haitian woman and stayed in Haiti. He felt he could help Haitians more by helping women earn money
