Afterwards, I re- member packing books and LPs in my room in Corry Hall as my par- ents hovered anxiously in the back- ground, wondering what I was go- ing to do with my newly-minted B.A. in literature. I had vague plans of going to Paris. Two weeks later I got a phone call from the State Department saying I had won a Fulbright Grant to study at the University of Grenoble. After a year in the French Alps, I reapplied and got a second Fulbright grant to study at the University of Nice. I returned in 1966 and got my M.A. in romance languages at Princeton the following year and my Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. My first college teaching job was at Kingsborough Community College. From there, I moved on to Queens College, where I have been teaching since 1981. I feel fortunate to have had as examples such out- standing professors at Antioch as Anna Otten, Milton Goldberg, Jud Jerome and Nolan Miller. They gave me both confidence and knowledge that has carried me through a won- derful career.
