their year by assessing the needs that are impacting youth, raising funds, and then granting those funds to a local nonprofit whose mission and work aligns with the YAB focus project goals. Charlotte Drake Youth Philanthropy Program Since 2004, the Charlotte Drake Youth Philanthropy Program has been providing funding for students in Yellow Springs and Miami Township for humanitarian or community-based projects. In the past, students were able to apply for grants throughout the school year for amounts up to $300 per project. More recently, the Foundation increased these grants to $500. Applications are reviewed periodically during the school year by the Charlotte Drake Youth Philanthropy Advisory Committee, a committee of their peers. The Foundation would like to recognize Desiree Nickell for her years of guidance and stewardship of this youth philanthropic granting process at YSHS. YSCF Giving Circle Based on an international model of participatory philanthropy, the YSCF Giving Circle was created in 2019 by a group of people from the community who wished to learn about local needs and philanthropy. Members donate what they are able, starting at $5 per month, into a pooled fund from which $500 grants are awarded to young people, ages 14–24, for social justice projects. In 2020, the YSCF Giving Circle grants were awarded to The 365 Project, one for a video project about social The Foundation expanded its youth leadership, philanthropy, and awards programs in 2020! By supporting students who are interested in leadership and philanthropy from the age of 5 through the age of 26 and beyond, we believe we are cultivating the next generation of community leaders, philanthropists, and board members. These dynamic young people will impact their community today while learning the skills to enact positive change in our world tomorrow. The Miller Program The Miller Fellowship Program will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2021! Nonprofit Leadership Institute and Miller Fellow Ambassadors For many businesses, organizations, and programs, it was a deep dive to figure out how to land on your feet in this sudden disruption called a pandemic. It was no different for the YSCF Miller Fellowship program. The Nonprofit Leadership Institute (NLI), the training program for new Miller Fellow Ambassadors moved to online in 2020. The Miller Fellow Ambassadors also shifted from working at their Host Organization’s site to virtual work assignments. For our outdoor hands- on-experience work sessions, they donned their masks, moved six-feet apart, and grabbed a shovel. Three NLIs were held in 2020, certifying 21 new Miller Fellow Ambassadors into the program. These NLI graduates were made up of students from Yellow Springs High School and local colleges in Greene County who wanted to learn more about nonprofits. Encore Miller Fellows The National Encore Network program, which is what the namesake of the Foundation’s Encore Miller Fellow program was modeled after, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2021, and so is the Foundation’s Miller Program! The mission of the Foundation’s Encore Miller Fellow program coincides with the national program by incorporating the core of the Miller Brother’s endowment—engaging our senior population every step of the way. It reads: “The Encore Network is a coalition of leaders who champion the civic, social, and economic contributions of people 50+ by creating community, stimulating learning, and inspiring action.” Everyone rolled up their sleeves in 2020 and made this virtual transformation not only work, but found very creative ways to allow our flagship program to thrive. New! YSCF Youth Action Board The YSCF Youth Action Board is a diverse group of middle and high school fearless thinking students who are passionate about solving community issues for youth and making the world a better place. The YSCF Youth Action Board (YAB) is a collaboration between the Yellow Springs Community Foundation, the Yellow Springs Schools, and YouthRoots, a youth philanthropy nonprofit based in Englewood, CO. This extracurricular youth board is engaged in training sessions through a three-step philanthropic process. The YAB culminates For our community to thrive, we all play an important role. Scholarships and Awards for Youth The Foundation annually distributes funds for over 30 scholarships to seniors of Yellow Springs High School. They cover a wide range of interests, including athletics, academics, first-generation college students, science, art, computer programming and history, students with special needs, vocational school, social justice, leadership, community service, and journalism. In 2020, 16 scholarships were awarded to 26 individuals. Three new scholarships were created during 2020: the Chris Rainey Memorial Scholarship, for the former YSHS teacher; the Yellow Springs High School History and Social Sciences Scholarship, created for students pursuing studies in the social sciences; and a scholarship in honor of the beloved school bus driver, Darryl Dewer, who suddenly passed in early 2020.
