More than 12,500 new cases were logged on the 21st, Vanderhof f said. In addition, 584 new hospitalizations were counted, for a total of 4,790 COVID patients in medical facilities across the state. Of those, 1,200 patients were in intensive care units and 800 were on ventilators, he added. “We should all be concerned by the tidal wave of hospitalizations,” Vanderhoff said. • Tuesday’s record number wasn’t the highest after all, however, as new case num- bers continued to climb the next couple of days, reaching 15,989 on Thursday, Dec. 23, according to ODH data. The week started with 7,639 new cases reported on Sunday, Dec. 19, and ended with 10,459 reported on Saturday, Dec. 25. The seven-day running average of new cases reflected the ongoing increase, moving from 9,390, as of the 19th, to 11,707 by the end of the week. • Ohio’s new case numbers per 100,000 residents, which represent a two-week average, showed a substantial increase as well, moving from 783.2 reported Dec. 16, to 1,009.6 as of Dec. 23. • Greene County also saw a further rise in its per 100,000 figures, with a two-week average of 530.4 as of Dec. 23, compared to 520.3 per 100,000 residents as of Dec. 16.
