Created in 1966 by scholar and activ- ist Maulana Karenga in California, the holiday highlights the seven principles of Kwanzaa called the Nguzo Saba, which are celebrated each day. They include Umoja or unity; Kujichagulia, or self- determination; Ujima, or collective work and responsibil- ity; Ujamaa, or cooperative economics; Nia, or purpose; Kuumba, or creativity; and Nia, or faith. Yellow Springs has celebrated Kwanzaa for the past 11 years on the second day, Kujichagulia, by lighting and placing candles repre- senting all seven days in a candle holder called a kinara, and with live performances. This year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the program was held virtually via Zoom, with participants gathered at the Bryan Center for ceremonial performances that involved music, poetry and dance. Also at the event, Vil- lager Paul Graham received the 2021 Nguzo Saba Award, acknowledging his civil rights activism in the community. According to program organizer Basim Blunt , this year’s program featured the largest number of young people par ticipating since the village began celebrat- ing the holiday. Pictured here are those young Kwanzaa performers: from left, Vincent Baker, Malcolm Blunt, Gini Meekin, Sumayah Chappelle, Arielle Johnson, Annlyn Foster and Kyla Randolph .
