In fact, it hit me like a splash of cold water in the face. The idea that some citizens of Yellow Springs have a concern that people coming into the village from surrounding areas will “dilute our creative culture” shocked and dismayed me. Then it made me embarrassed and ashamed, because I’ve also expressed a similar sen- timent. I’ve made disparaging remarks regarding my expectations of the aesthetic design of the development and the values and behavior of the people who would live there. Why is this happening, and what are we afraid of? Do I/we think that all the interesting, creative people in the region or the world already live in Yellow Springs, so we should close and lock the door? When Bronwyn and I moved here in 1999, no one met us at the village limits to question our politics, our ability to dance, sing, sculpt, knit, write poetr y, cook exotic foods, make our own kombucha or bone broth, start up a nonprofit organiza- tion that will feed/clothe/shelter/educate or other such wonderful things people in YS do. We just found a place to live and began to of fer ourselves to the community while taking in all that was of fered to us. We moved here despite knowing the high cost of housing, utilities and taxes, which continue to press in on us, and others, today. Anyone choosing to purchase a home in the Oberer development will do so knowing they could live for far less outside of Yellow Springs yet they will make the trade-of f for a variety of reasons. One likely reason will be that they identify with the culture, community, pace, size, energy and oppor- We are ‘them’ tunity for self-expression that makes Yellow Springs what it is. I thank Kevin Stokes for reminding us to be careful and consider our motivations when we refer to “other people” coming into “our community.” And I’m grateful for Sue T. Parker’s encouragement to simply “welcome our new neighbors.” Many, if not most, of us started our lives here as the outsiders coming in. We are “them.” If traffic, storm water and walkability concerns are properly addressed, I support the planned unit development, or PUD, which will create more opportunities for home ownership to folks in a variety of tax brackets. It’s clearly the better option versus the R-A single family home plan also on the table. A PUD will foster interaction across generations through density and intentional play space while increasing available affordable housing. All things I value, and I hope you do, too. In fact, your next new gym buddy, choir mate, babysitter, tax advisor, tutor or all around best friend just might move in there and show up in your life. Let’s put aside our fears and open our minds and hear ts. If that’s a bridge too far for now, simply appreciate that our tax and utility burdens will be spread out, provid- ing some much-needed relief for all of us. —Carmen Milano C O M M U N I T Y F O R U M WAGNER SUBARU 5470 Intrastate Dr., Fairborn, OH 937.669.7553 www.WagnerSubaru.com PROUDLY SERVING YELLOW SPRINGS AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY SINCE 1966 CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED VEHICLES 2020 Subaru Outback Touring XT L3270329 ................... $40,499 2019 Subaru Ascent Limited K3464526 .............................. $38,999 2020 Subaru Ascent Premium L3419628 ........................... $37,999 2019 Subaru Forester Touring KH455758 .......................... $35,999 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Limited MH272244 ...................... $32,999 2018 Subaru Forester 2.5i Limited JH554164 ................ $28,999 CARFAX 1-OWNER CARFAX 1-OWNER PRE-OWNED VEHICLES 2015 Subaru Impreza WRX STi F9837018 ......................... $29,950 2017 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler HL721203 ............. $28,999 2017 Buick Enclave Premium Group HJ182897 ............ $26,950 2019 Honda HR-V EX M7255199............................................... $25,450 2018 Ford Fusion SE JR230710 ................................................ $21,450 2010 Dodge Journey SXT AT180558...................................... $ 6,450 Love is now bigger than ever. 2017 Cadillac Escalade Luxury HR209384 ........................ $46,950 2005 BMW M3 5PN62578 .............................................................. $35,999 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 F1108502 ............................ $26,950 2018 Nissan Murano SV JN114682 ......................................... $25,999 2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i H3332642 ................................... $24,950 2018 Ford Escape SE JUA32248 .............................................. $19,999 2005 Ford Mustang GT 55155706............................................ $13,999 2011 GMC Acadia SLE BJ368687............................................. $10,450 With every new Subaru purchased or leased, Subaru will donate $250 to your choice of charities*.
