Living in a time of such uncertainty, we must embrace the journey and the detours. While no one would have pre- dicted the global pandemic, the closing of schools or the remote start to the 2020– 2021 school year, we must embrace the challenges and make the most of the opportunities. Our staff has spent the summer preparing for what will undoubt- edly be a different school year, and we are excited to implement everything we learned from the spring school closure to provide an engaging, connecting and academically-rigorous experience for our students. When the students begin their virtual experience on August 27, they will be greeted by our strong team of teachers ready to meet them where they are and challenge them at their level. The focus of our summer planning has been how we both support and challenge every student through engaging instruction of stan- dards-based content. Joining our team in this endeavor is new McKinney Middle School science teacher Mr. Cameron Dickens. He will be joining Mr. Kevin Lydy on the McKinney team as Mr. Lydy shifts from the high school down to the middle JACK HATERT, PRINCIPAL McKINNEY MIDDLE SCHOOL/YELLOW SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL school social studies position. Ms. Hannah Weinstein will now teach full time, teach- ing Government/Economics, AP U.S. His- tory, and 10th grade U.S. History. The end of the 2019–2020 school year challenged us as a school in healthy ways, forcing us to try new technology, teaching strategies and communication strategies. The school closure pushed us out of our comfort zone and allowed us to grow. We have spent time reflecting on that experience and are using it to inform our planning for this year. When students return virtually they will be working in Abre, a learning management system that will support organized class content and more clear school-wide communication. The student schedule will include man- datory synchronous meetings daily and an intentional advisory period that helps students stay connected. Students will work through their individualized student schedules, allowing them to pursue their specific academic goals. We believe these structures will support continued progress, growth and success as we deliver an engaging and academi- cally rigorous remote learning experience. Specific details around class expectations, meeting times and technology pick-up will be released soon. If your time, talents and interest permit you to partner with the teachers and administration, please contact me at 937-767-7224 to discuss. If you aren’t exactly sure how you can be involved, please sign up for One Call updates, or follow the district Facebook page, Insta- gram and Twitter accounts via our newly redesigned district website. These links can help keep tabs on school and district happenings as well as identify some of those opportunities to get involved that fit your level of commitment. Until then, enjoy the rest of the summer and get ready for what should prove to be a terrific year. Go Bulldogs!
