The faculty and staff of The Antioch School are looking for- ward to a positive, safe and fun school year during what will likely be the most challenging and unprecedented time in our 99-year history. With the help of national, state and local recommenda- tions, our faculty, board and community have formulated a plan to provide in- person schooling this fall. The Antioch School is uniquely posi- tioned when it comes to maintaining a safe learning environment during the pandemic. For starters, we are a small school with small class sizes. The fewer number of students means less individu- als available for contact, which means a safer environment. Antioch School stu- dents also spend a significant amount of time outside every day. We have outdoor classrooms that are used year round — even in winter! Outdoor learning has been an intricate part of the school since its inception — it isn’t an add-on to the curriculum because of COVID-19, it is one of the core principles of the Antioch School. The outdoors provides unlimited possibilities for learning, and our teach- ers are eager to explore those with our students. The school building itself has some advantages. Each classroom has direct access to the outside, so students can arrive and leave without ever having to go through crowded hallways. The classrooms also have tall ceilings with overhead fans to circulate the air up, and lots of windows that actually open, to ventilate the rooms. In warmer weather it is possible to get cross ventilation throughout the school through strategic opening of those windows, and we are installing additional window fans to help with that process. We have also pur- chased medical grade UVC light air filtra- tion units for our entire facility, including the restrooms. More details about our evolving Safe Schooling Plan can be NATHAN SUMMERS, SCHOOL MANAGER found at www.antiochschool.org. The Antioch School always meets chil- dren where they are, and this year will be no exception. Our core principles of play and curiosity, self-discovery, inclusion and diversity, and collaborative learning will continue to inform our priorities and processes. We are looking forward to welcoming back our students and fami- lies and finding new ways to incorporate those values. Although we will be limit- ing the adults in our building during this year for safety reasons, parent involve- ment will be more important than ever as we navigate new challenges.
