The mission of Open Air Village is to provide a respectful and nurturing environ- ment for the developing child. The school’s programs are designed to encourage each child’s growth by being in tune with their social, emotional, physical and educational interests. As a Reggio Emilia-inspired school, the school aims to treat its environ- ment as a child’s “third teacher,” putting careful thought into the space in which learning evolves and takes place. Open Air Village is directed by Nicole and Bryan Gay, whose first business, TA-DA Learning, held “nature adven- tures,” children’s yoga and sensory art classes for families through Fairborn Parks and Recreation and Beavercreek Parks and Recreation. For the past two years, the two have been teachers at Evergreen Chil- dren’s Center, a WILD-certified preschool in Beavercreek. Nicole is a 2010 graduate of Wright State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education. She was previously a kindergarten teacher in public schools, and also has experience in Spanish-immersion teaching in Chile and special needs education for second and third graders. Bryan has a business background, and is the designer of Open Air Village’s outdoor classroom. He aspires to assist other area schools with planning natural play-scapes for learning. The Gays are parents of two young daughters. Programs Nature-based preschool, ages 3–5: Open Air Village’s youngest students will learn naturally through play in the school’s outdoor classroom. Children will enjoy a daily rhythm filled with music, literature, big body play and sensory art. Quali- fied Early Childhood teachers facilitate a unique child-led environment where students are able to pursue their interests while meeting developmentally appropri- ate standards. Nature-based grade schoolers, K–3: Children enrolled in kindergarten through third grade can supplement their virtual or homeschool curriculum with social opportunities and connections to nature. Students will be given time to complete individual coursework as well as collabo- rate with peers on project-based learning. Group focus will be on educating out- doors, environmental studies and commu- nity involvement. Open Air Village is currently at capacity, but has a waitlist for new students.
