The local school board is a five-mem- ber, publicly elected body responsible for the policies, finances and personnel of the Yellow Springs Exempted School District. Board meetings are regularly scheduled the second Thursday of the month, typi- cally beginning at 7 p.m., in the Graham Conference Room at Mills Lawn. The board sometimes meets at the same time and location on the fourth Thursday of the month for an optional work session; other meetings are scheduled as needed. All meetings are streamed live on the district’s YouTube Channel — https://bit.ly/3lKXsao YELLOW SPRINGS BOARD OF EDUCATION — and archived there as well. Each serving four-year terms, current board members are Steve Conn, Sylvia Elli- son, Steve McQueen, Aida Merhemic and TJ Turner. Conn is board president, and Merhemic is vice-president. Conn, McQueen and Merhemic’s terms end Dec. 31, 2021; Ellison’s and Turner’s conclude at the end of 2023. The district offices are at 201 S. Walnut St. and the phone number there is 937- 767-7381. Emails for individual board members follow the form of first initial followed by last name @ysschools.org ; for example, sconn@ysschools.org . Y E L LOW S P R I N G S N EWS 2 O 2 1 – 2 2 S C HOO L G U I D E | 3 The past year and a half has been hard for students, families and educators. We have been challenged physically, socially, emotionally and academically. We have struggled in ways we may have never imagined. But we have gone through the struggle together and have the common experience to allow us to heal and move forward as one. When we return to school on Aug. 23, 2021, we will be returning with an appreciation for all that school has to offer. We will be returning with new experiences and skills that will allow us to reach higher than we may have reached had this pandemic never occurred. Joining our McKinney Middle and Yellow Springs High School team on this push for- ward is Ms. Erykah Andrews. Ms. Andrews will be teaching 9th and 11th grade Eng- lish/language arts. Mr. Rich Gillett will be serving as the new health and physical education teacher. Mr. Granville Bastin will replace Ms. Jody Chick as an intervention specialist as Ms. Chick transitions to the special education supervisor role. Mr. Alex Ameter will serve as the foundations and career explorations teacher at McKinney Middle School. Mr. Sam Jacobs will join JACK HATERT, PRINCIPAL McKINNEY MIDDLE SCHOOL/YELLOW SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL our Bulldog team as an instructional assis- tant. Ms. Joy Feola will serve as the new assistant principal for McKinney Middle and Yellow Springs High School. These new team members will join our strong staff as we return for the new year, looking to make up for lost time and missed opportunities from the past 18 months. We won’t be able to recover all that has been lost in a day, a week, a quarter or maybe even the whole year. But we will chip away at it every day, serv- ing the whole child and challenging each student to re-engage academically and to do all the small things that support a pos- itive school climate. We will be returning with a renewed commitment to project- based learning that is firmly rooted in the content standards and supports the skill development that is vital for student suc- cess after graduating from Yellow Springs School. We will be implementing positive behavior interventions and supports, or PBIS, district-wide. This system of support will help celebrate students doing the small things right — arriving at school on time, engaging in class and contributing positively to our school community. We will continue to develop the invaluable student and teacher relationships that are the trademark of our school. If your time, talents, and interest permit you to partner with the teachers and administration, please contact me at 767- 7224 to discuss. If you aren’t exactly sure how you can be involved, please sign up for One Call updates, or follow the district Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter accounts via our district website.
