ELECTION 2020 VOTERS GUIDE 8 November 2020 U.S. House District 10 Vote for 1 The 10th Congressional District covers the geographic area that includes Montgomery and Greene Counties, and part of Fayette County. * indicates incumbent QUESTION #1: What proposals do you support to address challenges in the healthcare system, especially in view of the shortcomings and inequities revealed by the current pandemic? QUESTION #2: Given our experience with Covid-19, what precautions would you put in place to allow for safe, secure elections so that voters are not forced to choose between their health and their right to vote? Include how you would fund any necessary precautions and changes. QUESTION #3: What role, if any, should the Federal government play in local policing policies and practices? DESIREE TIMS (D) BIO: The granddaughter of a southern sharecropper, Desiree Tims graduated from Dunbar High School and worked her way through college and law school. Later, she worked in Senator Sherrod Brown’s office and in the Obama White House. ANSWER #1: While Republicans work to undermine and roll back protections for pre- existing conditions, I will fight tooth and nail to protect them. I will also take on the insurance and drug companies to lower healthcare and drug costs, and fight for paid sick leave so no American has to choose between going to work and getting the care they need. ANSWER #2: Passing the HEROESAct will not only ensure much-needed relief for working families, it will also distribute funds to states to make sure our elections are safe and secure. It is critical that vote by mail is accessible, early voting hours and locations are equitable, and access to the ballot box is protected. ANSWER #3: The Federal government has an important role in ensuring funding for independent investigations, training for local departments on best practices, tracking systematic disparities, and supporting community- based organizations working to improve law enforcement. MIKE TURNER * (R) BIO: I attended Dayton Public Schools and graduated from Belmont High School. I received my Bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern University; an MBA from the University of Dayton; anda Juris Doctorate from Case Western University School of Law. ANSWER #1: Our healthcare system is broken and it is a system that does not work. We have to continue to find ways to amend the Affordable Care Act and make sure that we have a healthcare system that is restored and maintains quality care for those who need it most. Additionally, I continue to consistently advocate for protecting the health care of patients with pre-existing conditions. ANSWER #2: Voting is a cornerstone of our democracy. It is important for the USPS and other federal officials to work with Secretary LaRose and local boards of elections to make sure that people do not have to choose between their health and right to vote. I have urged the USPS that more mail processing needs to take place within Ohio leading up to and on Election Day. ANSWER #3: We have to make sure that our local police are funded properly,while also making sure their methods are safe and responsible.The federal government has taken important steps to reform law enforcement with the ban of chokeholds. Judge of the Court of Appeals 2nd District Vote for 1 Responsibilities: To hear appeals from the Common Pleas, County, and Municipal Courts within its jurisdiction. Decisions are final except in cases involving Constitutional questions, cases of felony, cases in which it has original jurisdiction, and cases of public or great general interest. The 2nd District covers six counties in west central Ohio including Montgomery and Greene Counties. QUESTION #1: Why are you the best qualified candidate for this position? QUESTION #2: Who would you choose as a mentor or role model as a judge, and why? (Please choose one individual.) QUESTION #3: There are many different courts in our court system.Why did you choose to run for the Court of Appeals? CHRIS EPLEY BIO: I was married 18 years ago in Dayton, where I was born and raised. We have two children. Over 30 years ago, I was a college athlete. I graduated from UD Law and practice law throughout the Miami Valley. ANSWER #1: 1.) I teach Appellate Practice and Procedure at UD. 2.) I serve as the Chief Appellate Counsel in Vandalia Municipal Court. 3.) I have judicial experience as a Dayton Magistrate. I have practiced law in all six counties that make up the 2nd District Court of Appeals. ANSWER #2: Judge Michael Hall – I appreciate his temperament and judicial demeanor.He is diligent in his approach to the law and shows fairness to those who come before the bench. In my 22 years as a lawyer, I have realized the importance of those qualities in a Judge. ANSWER #3: I teach and practice appellate law. I have a diverse legal practice where I handle many of the types of cases that come before the Court. I enjoy research and writing (English Literature and Spanish double major in college).
