Nonstop discusses academic freedom
Nonstop Institute will present “Dangerous Professors: Academic
Freedom and the National Security Campus” on Thursday, March 25,
at 7 p.m., with professors Malini Johar Schueller and Ashley Dawson. This
is the first in a series of Nonstop video conferences on higher education
issues.
Talk homelessness
Joined for Justice will sponsor a program entitled “Who
Becomes Homeless: How to Prevent It,” at the First Presbyterian

Hear Nonstop poetry

McKee group hosts Grote
The James A. McKee Group will host speaker John Grote, Yellow
Springs chief of police, on Sunday, March 28, 3–5 p.m., in the great
room of the Senior Center. The public is welcome.
AACW holds fundraiser
The AACW and Sista Iria will present “March to Zion Reggae
Dance and Caribbean Feast” on Sunday, March 28, 5–8 p.m. at
Brother Bear’s. The event will feature DJ Sista Iria, a performance
by the Soulfire Tribe and a Caribbean-style buffet. Admission is by a
suggested donation of $6 for adults and $3 for children, with proceeds

Special Council meeting
Village Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, at
Council chambers for a special meeting to vote on the second reading of
the 2010 Village budget. Before Council votes, there will be a public
hearing.

Saturday, March 27, Peach’s will feature
Crazy Joe and the Mad River Outlaws. The show begins at 10 p.m.

Gary Arnold performs at Clifton Opera
Gary Arnold will perform at the Clifton Opera
House on Saturday, March 27, 8–10 p.m. Gary plays his own
blend of folk and soul, predominantly on the acoustic guitar. Admission
to the show is by $7 donation.
Art
around town
• The Village Artisans is featuring Pete
Mitas, enamelist, in its gallery for the month of March.
• The Glen Helen Association, in
conjunction with its 50th-anniversary celebration, is sponsoring
a juried invitational art exhibit and sale. The show will run July
2–July 16 in the Glen Helen Building. A special patron preview
reception will be held the opening evening, July 2, 7–9 p.m.
All artists are invited to submit up to three entries that incorporate
the Glen or a nature theme for this special exhibit. For further

• For the months of March and April,
the Emporium is hosting “Village People,” an exhibition
of photographic images by Dennie Eagleson. The images are close
portraits of current and former villagers made over the past two
decades, and include some of Eagleson’s more experimental
work with plastic lens cameras, gel medium transfer and Polaroid
transfer processes. The images are a celebration of the vitality
of life in the village and demonstrate how, as members of a small
village, villages watch each other grow up.
• Mike Nelson’s water drop
photographs will be on display at the Winds Cafe through April 4.
In these photographs, art and science come together to capture images
of water drops exploding into color and form. For a sneak preview

• The Glen Helen Association is hosting
an art exhibition titled “Landscapes and Flowers” through
March 30. This one-person show by Yellow Springs resident Ann Gayek
features paintings of landscapes and gardens in Ohio, California
and Colorado. Show hours are 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday–Friday,
and 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The exhibition
is in the Glen Helen Building, and admission is free.
Senior events
Elie Weisel to give talk
Elie Weisel, holocaust survivor and author of the memoir
Night, will speak on Thursday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Schuster
Center in Dayton. Tickets are available for $15 and $20 by calling
228-3630 or 229-2545. Tickets will not be available through the
Senior Center. The Senior Center group will depart from the former
WSU clinic parking lot at Herman Street and Xenia Avenue at 6 p.m.
on March 25. The sign-up deadline has passed for obtaining a ride
with the Senior Center, but tickets are still available.
80+ birthday luncheon
Senior citizens of any age are welcome to attend the monthly
80+ birthday luncheon, which specifically honors those who are 80
and older. This month’s celebration will be held on Friday,
March 26, at the Friends Care Assisted Living main dining room.
Those attending should arrive by 11:45 a.m., and lunch will be served
at noon. Lunch is $5 per person, except those 80 and over with a
birthday this month. They will be guests of the Senior Center and
eat free. Those who plan to attend should sign up in advance by
calling the center at 767-5751.
The Met live in HD
On Saturday, March 27, the Senior Center will visit the
Hollywood 20 Cinema for a performance of the Metropolitan Opera
live in HD. The Met will be performing Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet.
The group will leave at noon from the former WSU clinic parking
lot at Xenia Avenue and Herman Street. Tickets are $20 at the door,
and the show begins at 1 p.m. Those interested should call 767-5751
in advance to sign up.
Have a cup of tea
In anticipation of hearing author Greg Mortenson speak
on April 7 at WSU, a discussion of his book Three Cups of Tea and
a tea party will be held on Thursday, April 1, at 1 p.m. in the
great room. Everyone is invited to come and learn more about the
book and the author’s school building campaign in Central
Asia.
Senior Center hosts tax help
The AARP-IRS Tax-Aide program’s free, confidential
tax filing help for low and medium income taxpayers of all ages
will be available at the Senior Center for the first time this year.
Electronic filing will be available. Those interested may call the
center at 767-5751 to request a 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. appointment
for Monday, April 5. Taxpayers should bring last year’s return,
W-2s, 1099s, medical expense information and health and long-term
care insurance payment information, real estate tax payment information
and all other pertinent information about income and deductions
for 2009, as well as Social Security cards verifying the numbers
of taxpayers and dependents.
Spiritual
events
Presbyterians celebrate Holy Week
The First Presbyterian Church begins Holy Week with a celebration
on Palm Sunday, March 28, with a procession of the palms and special
music by the youth. Rev. Doris Whitaker will continue her focus
on “Faces of Jesus” with the sermon, “Jesus the
King.” Worship begins at 10:30 a.m. and all are welcome.
Sunday, March 28, is also the collection for
One Great Hour of Sharing, where monies support ministries of disaster
response, refugee assistance and resettlement and community development
that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together
to strengthen their families and communities.
Unitarians discuss Armenia
The topic of the 10 a.m. service at the Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship on Sunday, March 28, will be: “Three Years in Armenia
as a Peace Corps Volunteer,” presented by Dr. Constance Speake,
professor emeritus at Northeastern Illinois University. The presentation
of Dr. Speake’s work in Armenia will include photos and traditional
music.
The 8:30 a.m. spiritual discussion group topic
will be: “How can we create a more spiritual atmosphere at
UUFYS? Is it our duty? Who and what creates ‘spirituality’?”
Child care for children up to age 6 is available
from 9:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
St. Paul Lenten series and Holy Week
On Wednesday evenings throughout the Lenten season, St.
Paul Catholic Church hosts a Lenten series, “Women in the
Community of the Beloved Disciple.” Patricia Brown will discuss
the scripture at the next meeting on Wednesday, March 31, 7:30 p.m.,
and will speak on the topic “Mary of Magdala and the Beloved
Disciple in the Resurrection Scenes.” Each session lasts one
hour, with refreshments provided.
St. Paul will begin observation of Easter on
Thursday, April 1, with a Holy Thursday mass at 7 p.m. On Good Friday,
April 2, there will be a Way of the Cross service at 2:30 p.m. and
liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at 7 p.m. Holy Saturday mass
will be held on April 3 at 8:45 p.m. Easter Sunday mass will be
held at 11 a.m. on April 4.
Methodists hold Holy Week services
The Yellow Springs United Methodist Church will hold several
services in honor of Holy Week, leading to Easter Sunday. Holy Week
will begin with a Holy Service on Thursday, April 1, at 7 p.m. On
Good Friday, April 2, a combined service with First Presbyterian
Church will be held at the Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m. Pastor
Hill will lead Easter sunrise service at 8 a.m., followed by a breakfast
at 8:30 a.m., served by the United Methodist Men. Easter Sunday
church school will begin at 9:30 a.m., and Easter Sunday worship
will begin at 10:30 a.m. |

Family laughs at Clifton
The Yellow Springs Tale Spinners will present their
annual Family Comedy Night at Clifton Opera House on Friday, March 26,
7:30–9:30 p.m. The YSTS will be performing family-oriented material
suitable for all ages. Admission is by a $7 donation. The venue is owned
and operated by the Village of Clifton, and donations received are used
for the restoration of the historic building.
Easter Bunny visits
Advocates 4 Animals will offer photos with the
Easter Bunny on Saturday, March 27, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Miami Township
Fire Rescue. Pets and children are welcome. Photos will be printed on-site
and will be $5. All proceeds will benefit Advocates 4 Animals, a local
non-profit animal rescue and rehabilitation agency.
Those interested in adopting a cat or kitten may also
stop by and talk to a volunteer about the many felines currently in Advocates
4 Animals’ foster homes. Volunteers will also be collecting donations
of supplies, such as old towels, paper towels, bleach, liquid Lysol, trash
bags, plastic grocery bags, cat food, cat litter, coupons, scratching

Dark Star Books will feature author Shauna Roberts
on Saturday, March 27, 2–4 p.m. Roberts, a Beavercreek native, will

Celebrate roots
The Tecumseh Land Trust, in partnership with
the African American Cross-Cultural Works, will host Roots Fest on Saturday,
March 27, 5 p.m.–midnight, in the John Bryan Community Center. Those
attending can enjoy barbecue and bid on local art and memorabilia that
have a story related to local roots in a silent auction. Performers at
the event include the YSKP singers, Jaime Adoff, John Booth, George Bieri
and Friends with Carl Schumacher, local band Wheels and the Nerak Roth
Patterson Band, with special guests Aaron Saari and Weymar Osbourne.
Tickets may be purchased from TLT through Friday, March
26, at $10 for adults and $5 for teens 13–18. Children 12 and under

Drum circle to meet
The Grandmother Drum Healing Circle will celebrate
the full moon on Saturday, March 27, 6–9 p.m. at the Rockford Chapel.

Lewis leads chanting
On Saturday, March 27, at 7 p.m., Lynnell Lewis will
present an evening of sacred chanting at the Dharma Center. With Indian
tambura accompaniment, Lynnell teaches and leads chanting from all Buddhist
traditions as well as Hindu, Sufi, Christian and African. The program
is free, and all, regardless of experience, are invited to participate.

Levy committee to meet
The Yellow Springs Board of Education will have levy
committee meetings every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Mills Lawn Library until
the levy vote in May.
Great Books group meets
The Great Books group will hold its next meeting on
Wednesday, March 31, 6:30 p.m. at the library. Ken Huber will lead the
discussion of “An Interest In Life,” a short story by Grace
Paley from her collection, The Little Disturbances of Man, and of three
poems by Wislawa Szymborska.
Writers’ club to meet
The After Hours Writers Club will meet on Thursday,
April 1, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at the Emporium. Participants are invited
to read their writings, exchange feedback, ideas and writing prompts,
network with other writers and participate in writing exercises. The club
is open to writers of all concentrations. Bringing something to read is
not required.
