Boys basketball—
’Dogs start season with split at Fairborn Tip-Off Tourney
The YSHS boys basketball team opened its winter season with a win and a loss during the Fairborn Tip-Off Tourney last weekend.

The Bulldogs lost their opening round game to host Fairborn, 74–52, on Friday, Nov. 29.

Playing a tough first half, YSHS led by 1 point at the end of the first and second quarters, 14–13 and 31–30.

However, in the second half, Fairborn was able to take control of the game and easily won.

“It seems like once they got the lead, we just lost momentum,” said YSHS coach Brad Newsome.

He said the team needs to improve its transition defense.

Dustin Rudegeair lead the Bulldogs with 21 points. Brent Robinson scored 11 points.

In the consolation game on Saturday, Nov. 30, the Bulldogs played a tighter game and defeated Cincinnati Schroder 66–55.

Although excited by their win, Newsome says he still sees room for improvement. “It’s still early and we’re still learning to play as a team. It’s a learning experience,” he said.

The Bulldogs are now 1–1.

JV squad splits 2 games

Like the varsity team, the YSHS boys junior varsity basketball squad also lost one and won one at the Tip-Off Tourney.

Fairborn defeated the Bulldogs 59–46 during the opening round of the tournament Friday, Nov. 29.

Cody Johnson led the ’Dogs with 23 points. Jake Fulton had 7 points and Brad Benning scored 6.

The next day, the JV team defeated Cincinnati Schroder 42–24.

Johnson again led YSHS with 13 points. Duncan Silvert-Noftle scored 10 and Wes Richeson had 6.

Girls basketball—
Lady ’Dogs drop 1st game of year
The YSHS girls basketball team failed to recover from a rough start as the Greenon Lady Knights overwhelmed the Lady Bulldogs, 65–39, on Monday, Dec. 2, at YSHS.

“In the first three quarters we were out-hustled,” said coach Shirley Cummins. “Then in the fourth we started playing like I know we can. Basically, we only played one quarter of real basketball.”

Carrying the game for the Lady ’Dogs was Evin Wimberly, a sophomore, who racked up 26 points and three steals.

Senior Ashlee Cooper scored six points for the Lady ’Dogs. Sophomore Sarah Finn had three blocks.

Greenon was led by Kara Englefield, who scored 25 points, and Lauren Bahun, who had 18.

Cummins said that she’s keeping a positive outlook. “We didn’t put it all together in that game, but I know what we can do, so I’m not too down,” she said.

YSHS is now 1–1 this year.
