High school boys basketball—
Best start since ’92 for YSHS

The YSHS boys varsity basketball team last week improved its record to 5–1 and 3–0 in the Metro Buckeye Conference with a 98–34 win against Middletown Christian and an 81–72 victory over Xenia Christian.
The Bulldogs are off to their best start since 1992.
Playing at home Tuesday, Dec. 10, the ’Dogs jumped off to a 28–8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. YSHS increased its lead to 52–18 at the half with a suffocating defense that recorded 24 steals.
Brent Robinson lead the Bulldogs with 24 points and five rebounds. Jordan Skinner had 18 points, and Dustin Rudegeair scored 10 and grabbed 14 rebounds. Anthony Brandon also had five boards.
The Bulldogs traveled to Xenia for a much anticipated game against Xenia Christian Friday, Dec. 13.
“That was one of the games we marked
on the calendar because they were picked to finish ahead of us in the conference,” coach Brad Newsome said.
It was a highly competitive game,
and the ’Dogs took a small lead early in the game, only to trail 41–36 at the half.
Rudegeair helped the Bulldogs storm back in the third quarter, scoring 16 of the team’s 25 points in the period. Rudegeair finished the game with 26 points.
“We were very excited about the way the kids pulled through a slow first half,” Newsome said.
Newsome also credited Andrew Richlen with an excellent game. Richlen scored 14 points and pulled down a team high of 18 rebounds.
Skinner scored 21 points and Robinson had 12.
JV squad dominates
The YSHS junior varsity squad claimed a decisive 71–31 victory against Xenia Christian on Friday, Dec. 13.
Leading scorers for the ’Dogs were Cody Johnson with 23, Brad Benning-Clark with 14 and Duncan Silvert-Noftle with 10.

High school girls basketball—
YSHS loses 2 close games

The YSHS girls basketball team dropped two close games last week, losing to Metro Buckeye Conference rivals Miami Valley, 58–55, and Ridgeville Christian, 62–51.
The team’s record is now 1–4.
Playing without two players who were sick and without leading scorers Evin Wimberly and Tricia McLinden, who fouled out early, the Lady Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker at home, Thursday, Dec. 12, against Miami Valley.
“The ladies played with a lot of heart in this game,” said coach Shirley Cummins.
YSHS stayed close and trailed Miami Valley by 1 point at the end of the third quarter before eventually losing by 3.
“Everyone contributed in some way. They had to,” said Cummins.

She singled out freshmen Becky Pasch and Megan Burrick for their strong offensive and defensive play.
Despite fouling out, Wimberly led the Lady Bulldogs with 22 and McLinden had 11. Emily Foubert scored 8, Jesslyn Yelton and Pasch each had 4 and Dana Ingham and Burrick each had 3.
Saturday, Dec. 14, the girls lost another close game against home team Ridgeville Christian.
YSHS led by 8 after the first quarter, but Ridgeville Christian was able to tie the game at 29 as the teams headed to the locker room at the half.
The game slowly got away from the Lady Bulldogs in the second half.
“We still haven’t put together four complete quarters,” said Cummins, “I’d say we played well for two-and-a-half quarters.”
She added, “When we get the basics in that last quarter-and-a-half down, look out.”
Wimberly had another great game and scored 23 points, swiped eight steals, had six assists and grabbed four rebounds. Foubert scored 7, Yelton and Burrick each had 6, McLinden had 4, Pasch had 3 and Sarah Finn, 2. Dana Ingham had two assists and five rebounds.

Andy Peters was named an All-American at the Junior Olympic track meet Saturday.

Peters wins national honors
Andy Peters, a seventh grader at the McKinney School, earned All-American honors Saturday, Dec. 14, at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Cross CountryNationals in Carrollton, Ga.
A member of the McKinney cross country team, Peters finished in 19th place with a time of 11:42.
A total of 327 individuals had qualified for the National Championship race through 16 regional competitions held in November across the United States.
Peters also led his club team, the Miami Valley Track Club, a traveling squad composed of 11- and 12-year-old runners from the Dayton-Springfield area, to a 12th place finish in the team competitiion.

McKinney boys win two more
The McKinney School boys basketball team is on a three-game winning streak after easily defeating visiting Ridgeville Christian 58–15 and visiting Stivers 47–19 last week.
The Bulldogs dominated their home opener Saturday, Dec. 14, against Ridge-ville Christian.
“We came out strong [and] maintained our strength throughout the game,” said coach Shirley Martin.
Leading the way for the ’Dogs was Kilan Brown who scored 28 points. Peter Lovering had 8, Kyle Buchwalder and Andrew Ferguson each had 6, Yosef Johnson had 4, and James Butler, Kumar Jensen and Todd Sheets each had 2.
McKinney recorded another lopsided win Monday, Dec. 16, against Stivers, by using a well executed man-to-man defense.
“The team is really coming together as a unit,” Martin said
Brown again led the team with 12 points, while Sheets had 11, Butler scored 6, Buchwalder, Lovering and Ben Welsh all had 4, Ferguson scored 3, and Jensen, 2.
The Bulldogs are now 3–1.

YSHS basketball schedule change
Yellow Springs High School announced two changes that have been made in this weekend’s sports schedule.
The boys basketball games this Friday, Dec. 20, against Miami Valley and this Saturday, Dec. 21, against Greeneview, will now be a triple-header, with the addition of a freshman boys game at 4:30 p.m. The junior varsity games will now start at approximately 6 p.m. and the varsity games will tip-off around 7:30 p.m.
A junior varsity girls basketball game against Trotwood has been added to the schedule and will be played this Saturday, Dec. 21, with tip-off at noon.
There will be no charge to attend this game.

YSHS swimmers hit water in first meet of the season
The YSHS boys and girls swim teams competed against 14 other schools in the Greenon High School Fall Invitational at Wittenberg University on Friday, Dec. 13.
The Yellow Springs boys placed fourth behind Springfield North, Fairborn and Springfield Catholic Central.
The girls team did not score but swam well against stiff competition, as several freshman and sophomore swimmers had their first taste of high school competition.
The meet consisted of shorter races, compared to the usual high school meets, so speed was at a premium. YSHS coaches Dave Wishart and Seth Moore said they were impressed by the teams’ overall performances and that the boys exceeded their expectations.
“We should be extremely competitive by the time sectionals roll around in February,” Wishart said. “Our guys swam very well. And it was great to have relays in the water on the girl’s side. We have several younger swimmers on both teams who performed well and had fun doing it. We’ve been having good practices and this promises to be a fun and exciting season for both teams.”
Both the 200 medley relay team of Spencer Jordan, Aaron Zagory, Michael Hosket and Jon Bullock, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Zagory, Hosket, Bullock and Andy Chen finished in fourth place.
Hosket placed second in the 50 butterfly and third in the 100 freestyle. Bullock finished fourth in the 50 backstroke.
Zagory finished sixth in the 100 freestyle, with a personal best time of 59.18.
Jordan placed sixth in the 100 individual medley and Jacob Wishart finished sixth in the 50 backstroke.
Competing in their first high school meets, three other boys swam well: Miggy Visbal in the breaststroke, Will McCuddy in the 100 free and Kyle McEvoy in the 50 freestyle.
In the girls competition, fine early season swims were posted by Monica Erickson in the 100 individual medley and the 50 butterfly; Julia Swisher in the 100 freestyle and the 50 backstroke; and Elizabeth Dixon in the 100 freestyle and the 50 breastroke.
Swimming in their first high school meets were Morgan Laurens in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, Amanda Bush in the 50 free and 50 back, Paia LaPalombara in the 50 free and the 50 breaststroke, and Sarah Wolfe in the 50 free and the 50 back.
