Sea
Dogs split in 2nd lap of season
The Yellow Springs
Sea Dogs swam well last week, losing a close meet to Waynesville and defeating
the People’s Aquatic Club in Dayton.
On Tuesday, June
24, the Dogs posted solid results, especially in the girls 9–10
and boys 9–10 categories, where six swimmers in each category scored
points. Seven swimmers in the boys 15–18 added to the night’s

The next meet, on
Thursday, June 24, was cut short by thunderous rainstorms. Still, by the

swimmers placed for the first time this season.

Minor
League baseball report
On June 9, the Pirates
played the Indians for the second time, and this time it was the Pirates
who came up with the 1-run victory. Patrick Morrissey had an infield home
run while Aidan Shackleford collected his fourth straight hit, maintaining
his perfect batting average. The stars of the field were A.J. Wagner,
Adrianne Beer and Andrew Sherwood.
Then on June 21,
the Cardinals defeated the Reds, 24–12. For the Cardinals, Lonya
Clark was 6–6 with 5 RBI, and 6 runs scored. C.J. Lloyd also had
six hits and 5 RBI. Audrey Fletcher and Cole Honeycutt each scored 4 runs.
The Reds started strong but couldn’t keep up with the Cards’
offensive firepower.
In later action on
June 21, the Giants and the Indians battled to a 10–10 tie. Mario
Cosey and Jesse Jewell led the way for the Giants with four hits, and
Nathaniel Reed scored 3 runs, as the Giants scored 5 in the fourth inning
to take a 10–6 lead. The Indians battled back, as Nicky Sontag and
Will Turner collected four hits, and Salome Garcia-Halpin, Robert Harden
and Elliot Snay had three hits each. Bryson Lee and Elliot Snay added
strong fielding for the Indians.
The Cardinals and
the Reds had a rematch on June 25. The score was 6–5 early in the
game, when excellent defense by Cardinals infielders Stephanie Lloyd,
Tony Parker and Keida Johnson allowed the Cards to pull ahead to a 12–8
victory.
On Friday, June 27,
the Indians built a lead early in the game and held off the Reds, 8–4.
Aidan Ceney and Elliot Snay led the Reds with two hits and 2 runs scored,
setting the table for Will Turner, who drove in 5 runs on three extra-base
hits. In a balanced attack, Robert Harden, Bryson Lee and Nicky Sontag
also contributed two hits each for the Indians.
The Giants earned
a hard-fought 9–8 victory over the Reds on Saturday, June 28. The
Reds jumped out to an early lead thanks to Carter Collins, who had three
hits, and Addison Pettiford, who scored twice.
The Giants defense
stiffened and they trailed by 1 in their last at-bat when Clay led off
the fifth with his fourth hit, and scored his 4th run of the game as Jacob
Trumbull’s tied the game with a hit. Two outs later, with runners
on the corners, Brandon Moore lined the ball up the middle. The Reds’
Allison Berry knocked it down and threw to first. Moore beat the throw
by a split second, as Nathaniel Reed scored to give the Giants the win.
The late game on
June 28 was one of the best games played on the Minor League diamond this
year, when the Cardinals and the Indians fought back and forth battle.
The Cardinals scored 4 runs in the top half of the last inning to tie
the game 14–14, only to have the Indians score the winning run with
two outs in their last at-bat for an exciting finish.
