Sea
Dogs sink in season openers
The
Yellow Springs Sea Dogs braved cold water and the cool evening air during
their first two meets, turning many lips a Sea Dog blue.
Coach Dave Wishart
said that the cold temperatures meant the Yellow Springs swimmers only
practiced three times before their first competition against Clinton County
on June 17. “Still,” he said, “whenever we score over
150 points against powerhouse Clinton County, we’re doing well.”
Sam Lovering and
Kelby Dierking both placed first in each of their three individual events.
While the Sea Dogs
lost to Beavercreek’s Greene Valley on Thursday, June 19, they showed
strength in the girls’ 8 and under and 9–10 categories and
the boys 13–14 and 15–18 categories.

Peters places 4th in racewalk at Nationals meet
Tina Peters finished fourth in the 10,000-meter racewalk at the USA Track
& Field National Championships at Stanford University last weekend.
Peters, who will
be a sophomore at Yellow Springs High School this fall, finished in 56:16:28,
three minutes and 15 seconds better than her 11th-place finish last year.
Christine Taeliaferri,
a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin, won the event in 55:15.49.
Peters and Taeliaferri shared the lead with runner-up and pre-race favorite
Maria Michta during the first third of the race.
The USA Nationals
is the selection competition to determine the composition of the American
track team that will compete internationally. Peters, who at 15 was the
youngest competitor in the field, just missed earning a spot on the Pan
American Junior squad (19 and younger), which will face Canada in a dual
meet later this summer.
Peters is currently
en route to the Olympic Training Center in San Diego. She was one of three
high school girls nationwide invited to participate in a weeklong training
camp with the Olympic team coaches.
Major League baseball report
After a week of rainouts the players and coaches of the Major League baseball
league were wondering if they’d ever play baseball again.
But, on Wednesday,
June 18, the sun came out, the Village parks department got the field
graded and lined, and it was time to play baseball again. The Cubs played
their first game in almost two weeks, losing to the Reds, 20–11.
Ethan Brown started and got his fifth win, collecting six strikeouts over
three innings, while allowing only four hits and 5 runs. Todd Sheets pitched
the final two innings, striking out three.
Joe Fugate went 3–3
with a double and 2 RBI. Ben Clonch was 2–2 with a home run, Dylan
Clonch was 2–4, with a triple and 3 RBI.
Alexis Onfroy-Curley
started for the Cubs and pitched three innings. Sam Morrison pitched two
innings in relief, allowing only three hits, 2 runs and striking out two.
Hannah Montgomery got her first Major League hit and played flawlessly
in the outfield. Onfroy-Curley was 3–4, Buddy Adkins was 2–3,
including a massive triple, and Carl Wiener was 2–3 with a double.
On Saturday, June
21, three games were played — two at home and one at Cedarville.
In the first home
game, the A’s beat the Yankees on strong pitching by Alex Turner.
Jericho Stubblefield and Anthony Gilmore both homered for the A’s.
Sara Adkins, Aaron Fletcher and Jamie Kitzmiller also contributed to the
win.
In the second game,
the Cubs defeated Cedarville 2, 26–18.
Alexis Onfroy-Curley
started for the Cubs and was relieved after two innings by Lauren Miles.
Every player contributed to the win — stand outs were David Ingham,
Miles, Zack Donley, Steven Scott and Justin Donley.
The Reds traveled
to Cedarville to play their second away game, beating Cedarville 1, 19–4.
The Reds improved to 6–0.
Ethan Brown again
started and again got the win, adding six more strikeouts to increase
his season total to a league-leading 41. Every Red contributed with great
defense, as they have done all year. James Butler went 2–4, including
a towering double. Ryan Silvert was 4–4, with a double and 4 RBI.
We play a full schedule
this week, with home games Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m.,
and games at Cedarville on Thursday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
and noon.
