Scholars honored at YSHS ceremony

Yellow Springs High School honored a host of students at its annual awards ceremony Wednesday, May 21.

Among those honored was the Class of 2003 valedictorian Andy Chen, who received the $4,000 Foos Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Lions Club, a $2,000 yearly Ohio Academic Scholarship and a $1,000 Dr. Englefield and Dr. Fang Scholarship. He was also named an Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete and received a Mathematics Award.

Co-salutatorian Eli Visbal received a $6,000 Yellow Springs Instruments Company Science Scholarship and the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award. He was also named a National Hispanic Scholar.

Co-salutatorian Matt Zaremsky received a $19,424 yearly Kenyon College Scholarship, the $10,000 yearly Distinguished Academic Scholarship from Kenyon College, a $2,000 yearly Goodrich Merit Scholarship (National Merit Scholarship), and a $2,000 Ohio Academic Scholarship. He was also named a National Merit Finalist and received a Mathematics Award.

Emma Robinow received a $2,000 scholarship from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873. She was named an Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete and received a U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award and an Ohio High School Athletic Association Archie Griffin Sportsman Award.

John Poortinga received a quarterly $8,900 Emerson Grant and a $1,500 scholarship from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873 and a $100 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group.

Amy Price was named the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award winner and received the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

Malorie Harshaw-Hess received a $500 scholarship from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873.

Brian Mayer received a $2,500 GEM (Go the Extra Mile) scholarship, a $300 achievement gift from the Shirley Mullins Endowment Fund and a $100 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group.

Nichole Daegele received a $1,000 yearly Florida International merit scholarship, a $5,000 yearly Pace University Trustees scholarship and a $100 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group.

Keira Philipp-Schnurer was named a National Merit Finalist.

Dylan Borchers received a $1,000 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group and a $300 YSHS Metro Buckeye Scholarship.

Rhyan Smith received a $500 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group. The granddaughter of James McKee, Smith also received a special Men’s Group Board of Directors award for both her own achievements and her family’s long tradition in public service and community participation.

Jennifer Starbuck won the $600 Mary Jane Bachtell Award for Creative Writing and the Bent Scholarship for biology.

Aaron Zagory received a Mathematics Award.

James Hyde received Mathematics Awards and the $50 Mary Jane Bachtell Award for Creative Writing for juniors.

Travis Dean received the Peacemaker of the Year Award, which includes a $100 savings bond, and an Ohio High School Athletic Association Archie Griffin Sportsman Award.

Matt Carr received a $7,000 yearly Presidential Honors Scholarship.

Sam Klontz received a $6,500 yearly scholarship from the University of Dayton and a $100 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group.

Mike Mucher received the $3,500 Founders Award and a Greene County Youth Activity Fund Scholarship.

Evan Davis received a $100 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group.

Dustin Rudegeair received a Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.

First place in the Yellow Springs Arts Council Student Art Awards went to John Poortinga, who received $500. Becky Gaskill won second place and $250. Third place and $50 went to Mary Keefe. Owen Wolfe, Elizabeth Firestone and Emma Robinow received honorable mention.

John Grubbs received a $300 Agnes Strohm Scholarship and a Marjorie Street Memorial Music Scholarship from the Xenia Music Club.

Aaron Dozeman received a $300 achievement gift from the Shirley Mullins Endowment Fund and a Marjorie Street Memorial Music Scholarship.

Jennifer Gordon received a $100 achievement gift from the Mullins Endowment Fund.

Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Competition winners were Jake Fulton, Darcy Hennessy, Monica Erickson, Steve Morris, Matt Zaff, Becky Gaskill, Sam Klontz, Joey Lurie, John Poortinga and Owen Wolfe.

Scholastic Art Awards Regional Contest winners were: John Poortinga, Bethany Borbely, Glenn Reed, Clara Peters, Joey Lurie, Mary Keefe, Darcy Hennessy and Rose Blakelock.

Willow Holser and Jesse Thomas each received the Mary Jane Bachtell Award for Creative Writing honorable mention.

Having met the criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education and YSHS, the following students received Honors Diplomas in recognition of their academic achievement and commitment to excellence: Walt Beer, Dylan Borchers, Matt Carr, Andy Chen, Nichole Daegele, Evan Davis, Lilith Dornhuber deBellesiles, Jennifer Gordon, Malorie Harshaw-Hess, Willow Holser, Sam Klontz, Mike Mucher, Keira Philipp-Schnurer, John Poortinga, Emma Robinow, Jennifer Robinow, Eli Visbal, Brendan Willis, Owen Wolfe and Matt Zaremsky.

The following students met the necessary criteria for the Award of Merit, which provides students with an opportunity to receive recognition for their total educational achievements: Dylan Borchers, Drew Breckner, Matt Carr, Andy Chen, Ashlee Cooper, Nichole Daegele, Evan Davis, Aaron Dozeman, Jennifer Gordon, Malorie Harshaw-Hess, Sam Jacobs, Sam Klontz, Brian Mayer, Mike Mucher, Keira Philipp-Schnurer, John Poortinga, Emma Robinow, Jennifer Robinow, Eli Visbal, Brendan Willis and Matt Zaremsky.

The following students received the Academic Letter Award for maintaining a 3.6 GPA for the school year’s three quarters: ninth grade: Bethany Borbely, Elizabeth Brown, Amanda Bush, Tina Chen, Carey Dixon, Laura Garcia, Anna Haller, Anna Kyaio, Allix North, Christina Peters and Aaron Zaremsky;

—10th grade: Charles Cromer, Sarah Finn, Cooper Fleishman, Emily Foubert, Scott Keyes, Paia LaPalombara, Alexis Levesque, Tricia McLinden and Miguel Visbal;

—11th grade: Phoebe Bush, Teressa Carver-Halley, Nathania Dallas, Elizabeth Dixon, Lilith Dornhuber deBellesiles, Monica Erickson, Kelly Heaney, James Hyde, Katie Lovering, Alex Melecki, Jessica Northridge, Dustin Rudegeair, Matt Zaff and Aaron Zagory;

—12th grade: Dylan Borchers, Andy Chen, Nichole Daegele, Evan Davis, Jennifer Gordon, Sam Klontz, Mike Mucher, John Poortinga, Emma Robinow, Eli Visbal, Brendan Willis and Matt Zaremsky.

The following members of TEAMS (Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) achieved first place in Ohio and fifth place nationally: Drew Breckner, Andy Chen, James Hyde, Sam Klontz, Mike Mucher, Eli Visbal, Aaron Zagory and Matt Zaremsky.

In addition, the following students placed fourth in the region in the TEAMS competition: Dylan Borchers, Nathania Dallas, Elizabeth Dixon, Monica Erickson, Cooper Fleishman, Scott Keyes, Alex Melecki and Amy Price.
