OBITUARIES

Anthony L. Smith

Anthony Laurence Smith of Yellow Springs died unexpectedly in Xenia on Saturday, June 19. He was 39.

Born in Columbus on April 3, 1965, Anthony grew up in Yellow Springs and graduated from Yellow Springs High School in 1983.

Anthony was a card-carrying member of the IGA-land club — a group of about 20 friends who lived and played at the south end of the village. Even as a child, Anthony was an independent thinker and doer, helping to organize street football and backyard Wiffle ball “leagues” that drew kids from all over the village to spend their summer and fall days on Randall Road.

Anthony was best known for his prowess on the basketball court. During his senior year, 1982–83, the YSHS Bulldogs made it to the Final Four of the state tournament, due in large part to Anthony’s exceptional defense, rebounding and quick driving skills.

Anthony attended Ohio University and Central State University. He established A.L. Smith Consulting, Inc. in 1987. He was a dreamer of big dreams and pursued his business ideas with passion and confidence. He loved life and sharing memories with friends. He will be remembered for his hearty laugh, quick wit and his bulldoggish “never accept defeat” attitude. Anthony was a master storyteller. His outrageous narratives always entertained and were never short of the essence that characterized Anthony.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Garrett Johnson, Isabelle Johnson, Susie Mae Johnson, Mozelle Johnson Starks, Luther Leroy Cooper and Essie Mae Cooper; and his mother, Betty Carolyn Sims Smith.

He is survived by his father, Alphonso L. Smith; his sisters, Angela and Audrey Smith; his brother-in-law, Reginald Eason; his nephew, Brandon Eason; his stepmother, Kathleen Glover; two great-aunts, Aline Johnson and Anna Mae Rollins; many cousins and a host of other family and friends.

Services will be held Thursday, June 24, at Central Chapel AME Church, beginning with a viewing from 2–4 p.m.; a memorial service will follow at 4. A second service will be held at St. John’s Baptist Church in Memphis on Saturday, June 26. Following Anthony’s wishes, interment will be held at Fullview Cemetery in Ellendale, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, the Smith family requests that contributions be made to the Yellow Springs Community Foundation, in care of the Anthony L. Smith Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 55, Yellow Springs 45387.
