Yellow Springs High School honored numerous students
at its annual awards ceremony Wednesday, May 18, at the school gym.
Among those honored was the Class of 2005 valedictorian
Miguel Visbal, who won the $4,000 Edwin Foos Memorial Scholarship, which
is administered by the Yellow Springs Lions Club, and a Ohio High School
Athletic Scholar Athlete Award.
Class salutatorian Emily Foubert received the Greene
County Youth Activity Fund Scholarship for $500, a Ohio High School Athletic
Scholar Athlete Award and the Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award.
Foubert also received a Presidential Scholarship for $13,500 per year
from Beloit College.
Scott Keyes received the Yellow Springs Instruments
Company Scholarship for $6,000, the Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete
Award, the American Chemical Society, Dayton Section, 2005 Patterson Scholar
Award and a Stanford Scholarship for $28,806 per year. Keyes also was
named a National Merit Finalist.
Hillary Livingston received the John McConville Memorial
Scholarship for $1,000 and a $750 scholarship from the Independent Order
of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 and the Friendship Rebekah
Lodge No. 873.
Lila Jensen received the $2,000 James A. McKee Scholarship
from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group and the Ohio High School Courageous
Student Award.
Charlie Cromer received the Principal’s Leadership
Award, the Yellow Springs Arts Council Art Award, and a $750 scholarship
from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279
and the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873.
David Warren received the $2,500 GEM (Go the Extra
Mile) Scholarship, the YSHS Metro Buckeye Scholarship for $300 and the
Martha Dell Cadow Memorial Athletic Endowment Scholarship for $500.
Seiko Yamashita received a $750 scholarship from the
Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 and the
Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873, and a Boston University grant of $24,600
per year.
Bethany Borbély received a $150 stipend from
the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 and
the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873.
Kenneth Wilson received the Howard Kahoe/Dud Scott
Memorial Scholarship for $500 and a $150 stipend from the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 and the Friendship
Rebekah Lodge No. 873.
Will McCuddy received the $10,000 John Malone Scholarship,
a new award, and a $150 stipend from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows,
Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 and the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873.
Martin Bakari received a scholarship from the Shirley
Mullins Endowment Fund and a Boston University Scholarship for $34,000
per year.
Alexis Levesque received a scholarship from the Shirley
Mullins Endowment Fund and the Ohio Academic Scholarship for $2,205 per
year.
Peter Lovering received a scholarship from the Shirley
Mullins Endowment Fund.
Cooper Fleishman received a grant for $30,267 per year
from Kenyon College.
Noah Woodburn received a Capital University Trustee’s
Scholarship for $2,000 per year.
Duncan Silvert-Noftle received a Marquette Scholarship
in the amount of $18,500.
Tricia McLinden received the Greene County Retired
Teachers scholarship.
Paia LaPalombara received the Mary Jane Bachtell Memorial
Creative Writing Award for $600, the Arla K. Smith Planting Peace Memorial
Scholarship for $300, a Penn Grant for $20,500 a year and Ohio Grant for
$600.
Tina Chen received the Rensselaer Award for outstanding
math and science.
Cody Johnson won the Ohio High School Athletic Archie
Griffin Sportsman Award.
Evin Wimberly received the Ohio High School Athletic
Archie Griffin Sportsman Award.
Logan Sage won the Knowledge Works Award.
Eve GunderKline received an internship with Tecumseh
Land Trust after writing an essay on reasons to protect or preserve farmland.
Sarah Finn received the $1,000 Dr. Englefield and Dr.
Fang Scholarship.
Julia Swisher received a $1,000 scholarship from an
anonymous donor.
Joseph Lurie received the Wright State University Raider
Scholarship for $1,500 a year.
Kyle Truitt received a $4,000 Photography Portfolio
Scholarship and grants to cover college tuition.
Dustin Baker received a Sinclair Community College
Tech Prep Scholarship for $3,000.
Jacob Fulton received the WBZI Scholarship for $500,
the Distinguished Student Award, President’s Award of Educational
Excellence and Klein Tool Award.
Andrew Stillwell-Current received a Sinclair Community
College Tech Prep Scholarship for $3,000.
Noah Watkins was awarded a Sinclair Community College
Tech Prep Scholarship for $3,000.
Nathan Badger and Hanorah Campbell were named to the
National Technical Honor Society.
The following were 2005 Scholastic Art Awards recipients
in the regional contest: honorable mention: Emily Foubert (photography),
Joey Lurie (video) and Glenn Reed (video); silver awards: Erin Silvert-Noftle
(photography), Levi Armstutz, Erik Bean and Laura Hyde (video); gold;
Kyle Truitt (photography) and Sonny Thomas (video); and portfolio gold:
Austen Willis (photography). Kyle Truitt was an award winner for photography
in the National 2005 Scholastic Art contest.
Regional winners in the 2005 Ohio Governor’s
Youth Art Exhibition: for painting: Morgan Laurens; photography: Rhiannon
Carver, Sarah Finn, Emily Foubert, Laura Garcia, Zach Grim, Maggie Krabec,
Paia LaPalombara, Kyle McEvoy, Rachel Neal, Erin Silvert-Noftle and Austen
Willis; film/video: Sonny Thomas and Joseph Lurie. Sarah Finn and Sonny
Thomas were winners in the State Governor’s Youth Art Exhibit in
photography and film/video, respectively.
Toby Cromer and Georgia Alexander were winners in the
2005 Buckeye Film Festival.
Having met the criteria established by the Ohio Department
of Education and YSHS, the following received Honors Diplomas in recognition
of their academic achievement and commitment to excellence: Martin Bakari,
Bethany Borbély, Charlie Cromer, Emily Dozeman, Sarah Finn, Cooper
Fleishman, Emily Foubert, Jacob Fulton, Darcy Hennessy, Lila Jensen, Scott
Keyes, Maggie Krabec, Paia LaPalombara, Megan Lents, Alexis Levesque,

The following met the necessary criteria for the Award
of Merit, which provides students with an opportunity to receive recognition

Jacob Fulton, Darcy Hennessy, Lila Jensen, Scott Keyes, Maggie Krabec,

Award for maintaining a 3.6 GPA for the school year’s three quarters:

Two YSHS TEAMS (Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics
and Science) squads placed second and eighth, respectively, in the regional
rankings. The YSHS Team A also ranked sixth in the state and seventh in
the nation for schools of similar size. Team A includes Tina Chen, Charlie
Cromer, Carey Dixon, Cooper Fleishman, Scott Keyes, Paia LaPalombara,
Miguel Visbal and Aaron Zaremsky; and Team B includes Amanda Bush, Sarah
Finn, Emily Foubert, Matt Halm, Will McCuddy, Tina Peters, David Suzel
and Jake Wishart.
