OBITUARIES
Anna ‘Biz’ Laube
Anna Elizabeth “Biz” Laube died on Monday,
June 20.
She was born of hard-working, loving farm folks in
Lancaster in 1929.
Many remain to celebrate her life of loving, giving
and spiritual strength. It is in this time of sadness that the power of
togetherness and love shines the brightest.
Biz, a fraternal twin, married Francis Jerome “Jerry”
Laube, a paternal twin, in 1946. They had four daughters, who also had
children, Margaret, Sarah and Ben Silliman; Janet, Van, Dean, Maeve and
Will Morris; Patty, August and Jay Millman; Fran and Lily Acree; and four
sons who had children, Matt, Karl and Carrie Laube; Sam, Emma, Clara and
Mark Laube; Bart, Ava and Max Laube; and Charley.
James Clinton Kellogg
James Clinton Kellogg died Sunday, June 26, at Friends
Care Community. He was 90.
Until moving to Friends Care in 2001, Jim lived in
the Chicago area. He worked days in a factory while attending Chicago-Kent
Law School in the evening. Four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor,
he enlisted in the Army, serving in the Persian Gulf Command more than
four years. He was discharged as a captain.
Until his retirement when he was 80, he ran a solo
law practice. In 1990, he was honored as a 50-year member of the Chicago
Bar Association. He was named a Life Member of Bill Caldwell Post No.
806 (American Legion) and was a Mason.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over
60 years, Helen Klement Kellogg.
He is survived by three children and a daughter-in-law,
Susan Steffey and Dennis Kellogg, both of Chicago, and Scott Kellogg and
Linda Griffith of Yellow Springs; grandchildren, David, Peter, Leslie
and Elaine Boby, and Philip and Alexander Kellogg; great-grandchildren,
Aiden and Emmett Walkowiac and Evan Boby.
Services will be held in Chicago. The family expresses
their gratitude for the consistent respect and care he received from the
staff and volunteers at Friends Extended Care Center.
Alveda Hampton Williams
Alveda Hampton Williams of Springfield died on June
20. She was 79.
Born Oct. 8, 1926, in Springfield, she was the daughter
of William and Margaret Hampton.
She was a member of the House of Prayer and El Bethel
Temple. She was a retired employee of the Springview Center, where she
worked for 16 years in the “Grandma Program.” She was also
employed at Community Hospital and Wittenberg as a chef. She was an excellent
cook and enjoyed baking especially for the holidays.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, David E.,
Alfred P., Zee and Homer G. Hampton.
She is survived by her daughter, Alaina Reed Hall of
Los Angeles; son, Michael Tyrone Hampton Applin of Yellow Springs; two
brothers and a sister-in-law, Preston Hampton and Louis Sr. and Luvenia
Hampton, all of Springfield; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Blanche
Carpenter, Alice and Roscoe Shellman, Clara B. and Reginald Richardson,
Cathy S. Wilson and Lucille and Bill Brown, all of Springfield; grandchildren,
Andre Michael Cook and Tania Marie Cook; great-granddaughter, Jasmine
Cook; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 25, in the
House of Prayer in Springfield, with burial following in Ferncliff Cemetery.
The Robert C. Henry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
John H. Johnson
John H. Johnson of Xenia died Wednesday, June 22, in
Greene Memorial Hospital. He was 85.
He was born April 1, 1920, in Piqua, the son of Albert
E. and Gertrude M. Johnson. John was a dedicated member of Middle Run
Baptist Church, serving in the male chorus and as a former trustee. He
also was a former member of the Cyrene AME Church in Piqua and a former
member of VFW Post 768 in Yellow Springs. He served in the U.S. Army,
receiving an honorable discharge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace
M. Johnson; two daughters, Shirley Clemons and Joyce Harrington; two brothers,
William and James Johnson; two sisters, Geraldine Ewing and Florence Washington.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Shelia
O. and Ronald Brown and Clarice F. Thomas, all of Xenia; a sister, Glenzetta
N. Reaves of Piqua; three sister-in-laws, Novella Lee, Lucille Nared and
Sarah Johnson, all of Xenia; 12 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren,
33 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 28, at Middle
Run Baptist Church in Xenia, with burial following in Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Porter-Qualls Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sandra J. Hill
Sandra J. Hill of Springfield died on Saturday, June
18, at Miami Valley Hospital. She was 63.
Born on Nov. 22, 1942, she was the daughter of Ralph
J. Sr. and Irene M. Brown Burley. She was a member of St. John Missionary
Baptist Church and a retired inspector for Vernay Laboratories.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers,
Ralph Jr. and John; three sisters, Anna Crawford, Rosalyn Thompson and
Betty Hampton.
She is survived by her children, Marcia Y. Hill-Jones,
Derek T. Hill, and Sergeant Richard A. and Katarya Hill, all of Springfield;
three brothers and sisters-in-law, George E. and Louise Burley and David
E. and Marsha Burley, all of Springfield, and Charles and Bonnie Burley
of Parkland, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host
of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 23, in the
St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield, with burial following
in Ferncliff Cemetery.
Betty J. Duncan
Betty J. Duncan of Bellbrook died Sunday, June 26.
She was 79.
She was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Zimmerman, Ohio. She
was a loving mother who enjoyed taking care of her home and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five siblings,
Ron, Sharon, Dottie, John and Jeannie; and her husband of 49 years, Meril
R. Duncan.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia
and Christopher Gultice of Spring Valley, Sandra and Jack Reid of Urbana,
and Pamela Daum of Yellow Springs; brother, Will; three sisters, Thelma,
Barbie and Mary Jo; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held at the con-venience of
the family.
Mazzie L. Nipper
Mazzie L. Nipper of Yellow Springs died Thursday, June
23, in Community Hospital. She was 76.
Born Dec. 26, 1928, in Sandy Hook, Ky., she was the
daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Barker. She was retired from Friends
Care Community.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ova Nipper;
children, Phyllis and Bob Young, Dan and Robyn Nipper, Dennis and Jane
Nipper, and Kathey and Morris Williams; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren;
sisters, Ethel, Lena, Mary and Claris; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 27, in the
Jackson Lytle Williams Maley Funeral Home in Yellow Springs, with interment
following in Glen Forest Cemetery.
