YSHS recognizes students for academic achievements

The following students were inducted this week into the National Honor Society at YSHS, front row, from left: Alex Visbal and Erin Silvert-Noftle; back row: Toby Cromer, Mori Rothman, Carly Bailey, Mary Hyde and Sarah Reed. Yellow Springs High School honored numerous students for academic and athletic achieveme nts at its annual awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 17, in the school gym.

Among those honored was the Class of 2006 valedictorian Tina Chen, who received the $8,000 Yellow Springs Instrument Scholarship, the Ohio Academic Scholarship worth $8,000, an Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Award, a Shirley Mullins Endowment Fund scholarship, and a $150 stipend from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873. Chen was also named a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist.

Class salutatorian Carey Dixon received a Case Western Scholarship for $20,000 and $750 National Merit Scholarship. He was named a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist.

Hanorah Campbell received an Ohio Academic Scholarship for $8,000, a Miami Valley Tech Prep Scholarship for $3,000, and an $800 scholarship from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873. Campbell also was named the salutatorian at the Greene County Career Center.

John Pamplin received full tuition to Morehouse College, the $2,000 Bent Scholarship, a Shirley Mullins Endowment Fund scholarship, a $1,300 Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship, a $1,000 anonymous scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship from the Wilberforce Chapter of the Links, Inc., and the Ohio High School Athletic Association Archie Griffin Sportsman Award. Pamplin was named a U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete and was recognized by the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Elizabeth Brown received an Arthur J. Schmitt Scholarship for $13,000 a year from DePaul University, a $500 Antioch Company Scholarship, the Principal’s Leadership Certificate of Merit, the John McConville Memorial Scholarship for $1,000, a Shirley Mullins Endowment Fund scholarship and the Mary Jane Bachtell Memorial Creative Writing Award honorable mention. Brown was named a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist.

Tina Peters received the $4,800 Edwin Foos Memorial Scholarship, which is administered by the Yellow Springs Lions Club, a YSHS Metro Buckeye Scholarship, a Menno Simons Scholarship for $7,000 a year, an athletic award for $8,000 per year and the Ohio High School Athletic Association Archie Griffin Sportsman Award. Peters was named a U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete. Peters was also named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Aaron Zaremsky received a Distinguished Academic Scholarship from Kenyon College for $28,000, a Shirley Mullins Endowment Fund scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship from the Xenia Lodge Order of Elks, and a $150 stipend from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873. Zaremsky was named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Zachary Grim received a $500 Planting Peace Scholarship, a $2,400 Otterbein Endowed Scholarship and Ohio Choice Grant, and an $800 scholarship from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873.

Devinne Melecki received a $500 scholarship from the Yellow Springs Art Council and the Mary Jane Bachtell Memorial Creative Writing Award for $600.

Hallie Cranos was named a Wilkinson Scholar at Earlham College, which includes a $12,000 award over four years.

Issa Walker received the $2,000 James A. McKee Scholarship from the Yellow Springs Men’s Group for achievement in both scholarship and leadership and the Martha Dell Cadow Memorial Athletic Endowment for $500.

Anna Haller received the Presidential Scholar Award from Otterbein College for $11,000 per year, the Greene County Youth Activity Fund scholarship for $500 and a $500 Yellow Springs Education Association Scholarship.

Amanda Bush received the $10,000 John Malone Memorial scholarship and a $500 Yellow Springs Education Association Scholarship.

Nick Eastman received an Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Award.

Georgia Alexander received a $500 Gateway Scholarship and a $1,000 Ohio University Bobcat Award.

Rebecca Guest received a Shirley Mullins Endowment Fund scholarship and was recognized by the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Carly Bailey received a Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholar Athlete Award.

David Suzel received a Capital University Scholarship for $12,000 per year.

Alex Visbal received a Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholar Athlete Award.

Ian Ferguson received the $1,000 GEM (Go the Extra Mile) Scholarship.

Heather Semler received an $800 scholarship from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873.

Laura Garcia received full tuition plus a $500 Morrill Scholarship to Ohio State, a $500 Buckeye Community Scholarship, and a $150 stipend from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Yellow Springs Lodge No. 279 with the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 873.

Megan Burrick received a Miami Valley Tech Prep Scholarship for $3,000.

Anthony Carter received a Howard Kahoe/Dud Scott Memorial Scholarship for $500.

Kaleigh Upton received the Miami Valley Tech Prep Scholarship for $3,000 and a Howard Kahoe/Dud Scott Memorial Scholarship for $500.

Having met the criteria established by the Ohio Department of Education and YSHS, the following received Honors Diplomas in recognition of their academic achievement and commitment to excellence: Elizabeth Brown, Amanda Bush, Kevin Carr, Tina Chen, Hallie Cranos, Carey Dixon, Laura Garcia, Stephanie Goode, Anna Haller, Matt Halm, John Pamplin, Tina Peters, Jacob Wishart and Aaron Zaremsky.

The following met the necessary criteria for the Award of Merit, which provides students with an opportunity to receive recognition for their educational achievements: Georgia Alexander, Elizabeth Brown, Amanda Bush, Tina Chen, Hallie Cranos, Laura Garcia, Stephanie Goode, Anna Haller, Matt Halm, John Pamplin, Jacob Wishart and Aaron Zaremsky.

The following students received the Academic Letter Award for maintaining a 3.6 GPA for the school year’s three quarters: ninth grade: Erik Bean, Olivia Chen, Ryder Comstock, Max Fleishman, Crystal Reedy, Eric Rudolf and Amelia Shaw;

—10th grade: Miriam Barcus, Kyle Buchwalder, Max Buchwalder, Rosa Dixon, Thomas Jensen, Zac Katz-Stein, Peter Keahey, Lauren Miles, Jesse Rothman, Andrew Stratton and Ellen Swisher;

—11th grade: Carly Bailey, Toby Cromer, Whitney Finster, Mary Hyde, Michaela McCuddy, Sarah Reed, Mori Rothman, Erin Silvert-Noftle, Alex Visbal and Madalyn Welsh;

—12th grade: Elizabeth Brown, Amanda Bush, Marina Casson, Tina Chen, Hallie Cranos, Devinne Melecki, Tina Peters, Jacob Wishart and Aaron Zaremsky.

Two YSHS squads in the TEAMS (Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) competition achieved regional, state and national recognition.

TEAM A placed second in the region, fourth in the state and 10th in the nation. TEAM A includes Amanda Bush, Tina Chen, Nick Eastman, Matt Halm, Tina Peters, David Suzel and Jacob Wishart.

TEAM B placed fourth in the region, seventh in the state and 40th in the nation. TEAM B includes Carly Bailey, Brandon Carver-Halley, Marina Casson, Olivia Dixon, Mary Hyde, Sarah Reed and Jesse Rothman.

The following were 2006 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards recipients in the regional contest: honorable mention: Amanda Chapman (photography), Pete Lovering (film/video) and Toby Cromer (film/video); Silver Key, Rhiannon Carver (photography) and Brandon Carver-Halley (film/video); Gold Key, Ben VanCleave (film/video), Zack Reichert (film/video) and Nathan Moore (film/video). In the National 2006 Scholastic Contest VanCleave was a silver award winner for film/video and Reichert and Moore received Gold Awards.

Regional winners in the 2006 Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition were, for photography: Amanda Chapman, John Hempfling, Kelsey Keller, Rachel Neal and Andy Sontag; and film/video: Dylan Clonch, Nathan Moore, Sonny Thomas and Ben VanCleave. VanCleave was also a state winner in the governor’s art contest.
