OBITUARIES
William Prentice McCullough Jr.
William Prentice Thaddeus McCullough Jr., of
Yellow Springs, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died unexpectedly Monday,
June 12, at Grant Medical Center, in Columbus, Ohio. He was 75 years of
age.
William, affectionately known as “Mack,”
was born on June 13, 1930, in Cincinnati. He was the son of Rev. William
Prentice McCullough Sr., and Victoria Simpkins McCullough Brown.
His lifelong careers include coaching and playing basketball,
baseball and football. Many in the community will remember his role as
“Coach” McCullough in Yellow Springs athletics, having coached
junior and senior high school basketball, Little League baseball, and
youth soccer. Upon moving to the village in 1970, he assumed the role
of administrative director of the emergency department at Miami Valley
Hospital. In 1978, he was appointed Health Commissioner of Greene County,
a position he held until his retirement in 2000. During his tenure as
Health Commissioner, he served as president of the Ohio Public Health
Association. He remained active in the community, serving on the Board
of Trustees at the Friends Care Center in Yellow Springs until the time
of his death. Mack once said that of all the roles he had assumed during
his lifetime, the role of father was the one of which he was most proud.
He was preceded in death by his father, William McCullough
Sr., of Covington, Ky; his mother, Victoria Brown of Yellow Springs; and
his wife of 30 years, Sarah J. McCullough, who died in September of 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Sherrie McCullough, of
Yellow Springs, whom he married Valentine’s Day 2005; son and daughter-in-law,
Prentice (Macky) and Melanie McCullough of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter
and son-in-law, Helen McCullough Allen and Brad Allen of Columbus; son
and fiancée, Allen McCullough and Karen Eddy of Philadelphia, Pa.;
son and daughters Melvin, Alicia and Lydia McCullough of Charlotte, N.C.;
and several brothers, sisters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mack’s hearty laugh, his listening ear to family’s
and friends’ problems and concerns, his passion for sports, his
intellectual curiosity, and his love for life are just a few of the qualities
that were the measure of this husband, father, grandfather, brother and
friend. He will be sorely missed.
A viewing service for friends will take place on Thursday,
June 15, at the Jackson-Lytle & Ingling Williams Funeral Home from
5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will occur at the First Presbyterian Church,
